Wildlife Circus Bonanza • July 20th, 2016

dark_side_of_the_rainbow

This WednesdayJuly 20th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT.
Project: Wildlife Circus Bonanza
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: Akbar, the Freshmaker!

The colors are bright, the drinks are fresh, the ambience is accepting and welcoming, the night is perfect for a summertime outing, we will be waiting for you!

I’ve got for you:
6 Picnic Lion Kits
6 Carousel Horse and Giraffe Kits
8 Paper Bag Animal Kits: Owl, Fox, Bear, Raccoon
8 Mini Plate Owl Kits: 4 of them Purple, 4 of them Orange/Yellow

I’ve been in a complex head space this year, brain tied in knots mulling over the madness of humanity mixed with the hope of human possibility.

I’ve been asking myself, is it worth the incremental gains, to keep doing this CraftNight thing, fighting the collective malaise of our time and chipping away at big-city cynicism and self-centeredness every goddamn week one googly eye, one puffball, one drop of glue at a time?

The answer is yes.

Because sitting inside a Sisyphean mindset of hopelessness and resignation just isn’t going to do a single cotton-pickin’ thing. And no, it’s not a cakewalk, but no one said that hope is free, and no one said we get to eat rose petals, fried pickles, and honey all day long.
In the words of Albert Camus, “Life in the face of pain is the ultimate revolt.”

Therefore, please come to CraftNight and share with us but a moment of your revolt, your freedom, your passion.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Underwater Bliss • July 13th, 2016

mighty_bikin

This WednesdayJuly 13th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT.
Project: Underwater Bliss Craft Kit Times
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: Akbar, take me away!

Things are heating up in more ways than one.
In the midst of everything, let’s do some crafts.

CraftNight craft kits engineered for prime excellence are here to remind you that it’s summertime. Your kit contains mermaids, sea creatures, and extra sparkly bits! All you’ve got to  do is empty the contents of the kit on the table, follow or unfollow the directions, and spend some contemplative time assembling the pieces however you like.

The ocean is the world’s most shared resource, something we all have together. You yourself and everyone you know is 57% agua. The sea calls to us all the time, perhaps heed it’s call, get on your flippy-floppys, and go to the water. Mermaids, crabs and jellyfish can’t be wrong.
See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Pasta and Bean Mosaics • June 29th, 2016

undahwattah

This WednesdayJune 29th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT.
Project: Pasta Bean Mosaics
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: The good life at a great price, guaranteed!

Consider the lowly bean, and the lowly noodle.
Perhaps you’ve just been eating them mindlessly in a distracted way, but have you been really thinking about these food items carefully?
Perhaps you’ve just slurped ramen noodles into your face without a single thought about who made them, where they came from, and what they do for society.

You can keep walking past legumes and starches, or you can pause, and you can see these objects differently for a night, maybe even see them as ART.

Pasta and beans are usually unremembered, but not THIS night.

This won’t be the first time we’ve made mosaics with pasta and beans, and it won’t be the last. But even as I type this, in my studio, right behind me is a portrait of me that my friend, Kendra, made about 10 years ago, and it is one of the coolest things I own, and I cherish it. It’s not so much that it’s me, but the fact that she calmly sat there and put together a bunch of tiny, dried, perishable shapes together to make a visual idea.

I hope that pasta and bean mosaic-making interferes with your mind, and that your summer is enhanced by the experience.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Puzzles • May 18th, 2016

veggie_truck

TONIGHT! Wednesday May 18th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Puzzle Time!
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: The Gay Bar America Trusts

If you were to merely pick up a jigsaw puzzle and start working on it, you would find that it would be great for your brain’s skills of dexterity, spatial reasoning and logic. But this is so deluxe because it’s not just a puzzle, it’s a personal puzzle, so YOU are the master of your puzzle! By crafting your puzzle, making it your own, you’ll also be using your brain to enter a meditative consciousness, as well as exercising patience and persistence while socializing with others.

You could make your personal puzzle look like a personal pizza, which may or may not be a drag if you put it together while hungry, but who cares, it’s yours. It’s your puzzle. You could still, technically, eat it.

It’s cardboard, you can color it in with pens or with paint, and it really is up to you. Here are some personal puzzle subjects/suggestions:

  • Secret love note
  • Flight information
  • Portrait of a corn dog
  • Seascape
  • Coaster for Cocktail Time
  • Poem for a good friend
  • Mysterious Tree full of Rabbits
  • Connect-the-Dots (a puzzle inside of a puzzle! Freak Out!)

Furthermore, if complete puzzles are not your thing, make the pieces into a necklace, it’ll look so good. And if you don’t want to solve the puzzle, if putting it together and “not knowing” is your thing right now, well that’s all right with me. There are so many things in this world that we’ll never know, which I fully endorse.

See you at the Craft Table!

Spring Bead Season • May 4th, 2016

my_xacto

This Wednesday April 27th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Spring Beads, Spring Beads!
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: You’re gonna like the way you look, we guarantee it.

Springtime is bead time, where you adorn yourself with the things that you like, the stylish trappings of who you are. A great place to stop in and make for yourself a bauble, a fancy trinket, a treat for your wrist or a beaded headband for your mind, a place to make all of this on Wednesday is Akbar. I’m breaking out the beads, and beads are deep. Beads are more than colorful or pretty, beads are us.

Beads have been around a looooooong time! People used them for currency! They were also used as anti-stress devices, you could hold onto your beads and think about your life. This bead technique still works today. Beads are used for devotional praying, and they make great game pieces if you make a home made board game! Beads are so cool that we’re pretty sure the reason we as humans developed language is because we wanted each other’s beads. We built systems of language based on economic bead wants and needs. The oldest beads are about 72,000 years old, which means that when you wear a bead, you are wearing the first self help device known to humans. But beads didn’t just help one, they helped everyone!

Beads were around before farming, before language, before tools and shelter. Beads helped us develop social technology! Working with beads is mega primal, you’ll be like “Why does this feel so natural for me?” Come on into CraftNight and do some social technology with us, your ancient ancestors would be so proud!

See you at the Craft Table!
