Unicorn Pins! • March 7th, 2018

You’re an international person of mystery and intrigue, and even those who have never met you will be drawn to you… because you’ll brandish your self-painted unicorn pin upon your attire and spellbind every soul who gazeth in your direction. True, some may sneer, but only to feign their desperate jealousy, their envy and avarice amplified by your golden, unconcerned countenance.

These flat wooden silhouettes are not the entire unicorn, but rather just the head:

We’ll hand you one, paint it with stripes, dots, anything! Embellish with gems or glitter and MORE, and then we’ll put a pin-back on it and voila, you’ve got quite the beautiful unicorn pin, Prêt-à–Porter! 

Human beings have been fascinated by unicorns since forever ago, the Greeks filed them under Natural History (not mythology) because they absolutely believed unicorns were real, alive and frolicking somewhere in India. Since then, we’ve learned some things, calmed down a little and decided that well… okay FINE. Unicorns probably aren’t real… but we’re open to being proven wrong! A unicorn’s blessing is said to give you the power to succeed at any endeavor you attempt! Unicorns are signifiers of the ideals of hope and change!

When you wear unicorn fashion, you’re saying that you’re into certain things. It means you’re into whimsical notions. It also means you’re into the rare and unique and exquisite. Unicorns are capable of just about anything. Nothing says “body glitter” and “sparkly nail decals” like unicorns, fighting darkness, and bleak, oppressive regimes with experimentation, innovative ideas, and LOTS of froofy colors. Come in and get one, make it yours for March, and then let it be your totem for powering you up to clean the house, rock a new hairstyle, flirt with abandon, endless possibilities!

I’m going to play easy listening, and we’re going to settle in with some beautiful shiny glittery coloring sheets.
They have themes, these coloring sheets.
Some of them have foxes on them, some of them are about mermaids, others tell the story of the primeval world.
We’re taking it easy, because the 4th of July weekend was action-packed!

Besides, there’s such an emphasis on “blazing your own trail” and “re-inventing the wheel” and “coming up with your specially voiced plan” and I have every belief that we’re all doing that… but sometimes it’s just nice to not have to run every goddamn thing.
Sometimes it’s nice to chill out in a basic way and relax!

So tonight, there is a decidedly uncomplicated project waiting for you at CraftNight.

Have a cocktail, experience the air conditioning, empty your mind of the day’s kerfuffles, chill out with a chilled beverage, and color inside the lines.

Access your igneous, your sedimentary, your metamorphic self by making a PET ROCK at Akbar this Wednesday! Rocks are everywhere! We never notice them, they never get the glory and the prestige they deserve, but all of that changes this week. Rocks may seem indestructible, but in fact, they change over hundreds of years, a process we never get to see, because you know… we don’t last as long as rocks.

It has taken eons for these rocks to get to their smooth round shape, yet it will take you probably less than an hour to paint one of these rocks! Your interaction with your rock will be but a pitstop in it’s centuries-long existence. Once you get yourself to a rock and paint it, the rock will endure, as a paper weight, as a doorstop, as an attention-getting sculpture on a bookshelf, it will persist, and be a pet rock, for many years. It may even become a family heirloom! It will be your pet, your friend, your advisor during tough times, a comfort in it’s steadfast, reliable continuation.

It is rare to have a pet that will outlive you. Some people like tortoises or parrots, they have long lifespans, but none of them beat the rock. Pet rocks are quiet, friendly and inexpensive. You never have to change the cedar chips in the cage, or replace newspaper or even take a pet rock for a walk, they are just that easy to take care of, and they will never pee on the rug.

Mother Nature has been roasting and toasting us this Halloween season, enough to make you want to freeze one’s caramel apple and put it on your face to cool down. My goodness these temperatures have been soaring. Meanwhile, we’re going to have the A/C on full blast, and we’ll be playing fun stuff on the Akbar Jumbotron, serving some snacks to go with your drink special, and we will be making Halloween necklaces.

Human beings have been wearing necklaces ever since we figured out how to string stuff together. Necklaces made of stones, animal fangs, teeth, feathers, claws, shells, etc. still hang on wearers buried in ancient tombs. Necklaces stood for status, or royalty, nowadays people wear them for fashion, or for sentimental value, religious reasons, or to make a statement. So we’re giving you an opportunity to make STATEMENT JEWELRY tonight.

Feelin’ tough? Feelin’ pretty? Feelin’ haunted or depraved, strange and eerie? Feelin’ Fun? Are you feelin’ like a Halloween monster goddess? Are you a high priest or an art wizard? Are you the ultimate Halloween romantic?

A good necklace is an accent piece for a well-dressed person, just like a ring or a scarf or necktie or a good set of cufflinks. You’re not going to wear your Halloween necklace everyday, you’ll mix it up with your other pendants and the like. But this is special. This is your message to the masses, worn around your neck to advertise your individuality.

There’s one time of year where you can really overcrowd your look with bizarre accoutrement, so get into it, we dare you. Adorn yourself distastefully, put together a necklace that helps complete or create your fall fashion look.

Presenting: Beautiful Plaster figurines in three different Halloween themes for you to paint! Get yourself a beverage, sit right down and do some painting while getting to know your fellow Angelenos. Achieve the balance of being and doing in ONE NIGHT!

Your Halloween figurine will bond with your MIND and make you think about peanut brittle, pumpkins, hay rides, fall leaves, cinnamon, pie, tea flavors, creepy masks, Halloween candy, and skeletons. Such a thing might freak you out at first, but remember, it’s not “haunting” you, it’s just “reminding” you. Like an app.

It’s great to be in October, it’s great to feel the rain, it’s great to see big crazy clouds in the sky and people having hot drinks again. Rumor has it that Friday’s going to be HOT, so let’s all meet at CraftNight and hold a “weather seance” to keep temperatures down! Can’t guarantee that anyone will be listening to us, but you should probably be a little buzzed and engrossed in painting your Halloween figurine anyway.
