HAPPY SPRING! The Vernal Equinox is HERE, and it’s also a FULL MOON!

The daylight is longer, painted lady butterflies are bravely migrating from Mexico to Oregon in huge droves, Insta-Influencers are trampling the poppies, people are wearing SANDALS and SHORTS, the weather is warmer, everyone’s switching from hot to iced coffee, stores are full of bathing suits, allergies are going bonkers: it’s SPRING, YES IT IS!!!!

What are we gonna do about it? We’re setting you up with a bright and cheery faux flower kit that involves pipe cleaners, felt, sparkly bits, and a buncha other shiny nurbs for decorating. It’s dimensional, it’s vivid, it’s all the vibrant

It’s also PRACTICAL. This faux flowerpot kit thingy doesn’t need to be watered like a real flower, thus, it will last for a really long time, and you can relax. It absolves you from any real kind of plant-caring responsibility, it means you can make it, set it on a windowsill, and just FORGET IT. Because let’s face it, more tasks and functions just need to be put on hold for a minute, okay? Ugh, it’s been too serious lately, time to take a break and enjoy this new fresh weather! Not having to water this faux flower means you’ll be free to explore the bright and reckless bloom of spring’s frivolity at it’s absolute most delicious.

It is time to thaw out! Pack away your sweaters, bring on the leisure, imbibe the rosé, run through the mustard fields, wave to the wispy clouds and chase every shimmering promise!

I’ve got some NEW varieties of Springtime creatures for you to assemble and decorate for this week! Some of them are ladybugs, some might be chickens, could be a caterpillar or a hare, I’m making sure we have a good variety of items so that you have the very best crack at all the crafting sundries available to you. Pop in and enjoy climate-controlled crafting with a cocktail! 

The temperature keeps doing weird things, and so does the air quality. This is how we do Spring in LA, a fickle fluctuation of hot or cold, windy or still, overcast or clear… and it’ll do that until we hopefully hit “June Gloom” which might arrive anywhere from May to June.

LA Springtime Tips: Don’t put away the fan, or the heater just yet. Keep your water close and your allergy meds closer, buy extra chapstick, neti-pot the hell out of your sinuses, get those tissues with lotion so your nose doesn’t fall off, wear layers and take a light jacket everywhere you go. It is warming up this week, according to the forecast, and pollen counts are not off the charts, but pretty decent, and tiny funky particles are kickin’ up and making the air kinda gross but not unlivable, which means, there’s fun stuff to do this weekend! 

Venture out for some Queer fun! The first, on Saturday, is an all-ages family event, and Grand Park never disappoints when it comes to fun! I’m performing in a line-up of GREAT PEOPLE! The second event I’ve listed here is a 21-and-over event, a fundraiser at the Eagle for Dyke Day! Come on out, have a brew, get some raffle tickets, get spanked, enjoy convening with friends to support our upcoming day in the park! Details below!

Honestly there’s so much happening in April, just scroll down past all this folderol I’m typing and go see for yourself! Meanwhile in the CraftNight rumpus room at Akbar this week, there are the crafts to be had, and you really must have them. One need not travel to the outskirts of the city to witness cute springtime animals romping about, because we have them right here. We’ve got bunnies, and chickies, and lambies, and other supercute creatures for you to build. Display them on your shelves, your dashboards, your bathroom countertops, anyplace you desire. Wherever there is a flat-enough spot, you can put one of these little friends, or you can stick-em on the fridge.

In other news, I’m happy to report that the bees that were swarming and clumping on the side of our abode are gone. They swarmed, protected their queen, and after 48 hours, moved on elsewhere to a place they thought she’d like better. I couldn’t really think when that was happening, I love bees, but when they do that… they freak me out. But now that I’ve read some info about it, I feel flattered that they chose us for a little while. Apparently, the Spring season is bee swarming time!

Also: I directed Pat and Charlie in their latest escapade, their Solid Gold Lamé Cabaret! If things have been feeling too serious, or you want to snort your margarita out your nose from laughing too hard, maybe come see this show. We promise it’s the sassy sparkly diversion you’ve been craving.

RETURN of the Unicorn Pins • April 4th, 2018

When we last saw our wooden lasercut unicorn profiles, they were in a box… somewhere. And then I went out of town, and my poor CraftNight Lieutenants couldn’t find them anywhere, and so the unicorns did not star as the craft for that evening. It was a bit of a SNAFU: Situation Normal: Awol Forgotten Unicorns. You know, like they say in the military.

However, I FOUND THEM! I found the UNICORNS! And they’re FUN, and you can wear one after you paint it and glue gems to it and it will just be the everlovin’ BEST. I mean, this creature has been captivating us since 5th century BCE. Marco Polo thought rhinoceroses were the ugliest unicorns he’d ever seen and was super disappointed. Here’s a direct quote from when he was rooting around in Sumatra (formerly Basma):

“The head resembles that of a wild boar, and they carry it ever bent towards the ground. They delight much to abide in mire and mud. ‘Tis a passing ugly beast to look upon, and is not in the least like that which our stories tell of as being caught in the lap of a virgin; in fact, ’tis altogether different from what we fancied.”

Still, people were drawn to the power and mystique of the majestic unicorn. As late as 1741 you could purchase powdered unicorn horn in jars in London pharmacies. Obviously, we don’t have anything as resplendent as that, but well… they are wooden shapes for painting, and the resplendence is up to you.
