Mother Nature has been roasting and toasting us this Halloween season, enough to make you want to freeze one’s caramel apple and put it on your face to cool down. My goodness these temperatures have been soaring. Meanwhile, we’re going to have the A/C on full blast, and we’ll be playing fun stuff on the Akbar Jumbotron, serving some snacks to go with your drink special, and we will be making Halloween necklaces.

Human beings have been wearing necklaces ever since we figured out how to string stuff together. Necklaces made of stones, animal fangs, teeth, feathers, claws, shells, etc. still hang on wearers buried in ancient tombs. Necklaces stood for status, or royalty, nowadays people wear them for fashion, or for sentimental value, religious reasons, or to make a statement. So we’re giving you an opportunity to make STATEMENT JEWELRY tonight.

Feelin’ tough? Feelin’ pretty? Feelin’ haunted or depraved, strange and eerie? Feelin’ Fun? Are you feelin’ like a Halloween monster goddess? Are you a high priest or an art wizard? Are you the ultimate Halloween romantic?

A good necklace is an accent piece for a well-dressed person, just like a ring or a scarf or necktie or a good set of cufflinks. You’re not going to wear your Halloween necklace everyday, you’ll mix it up with your other pendants and the like. But this is special. This is your message to the masses, worn around your neck to advertise your individuality.

There’s one time of year where you can really overcrowd your look with bizarre accoutrement, so get into it, we dare you. Adorn yourself distastefully, put together a necklace that helps complete or create your fall fashion look.

Autumn Leaf Craft • Sept. 29th, 2015

hidden_melons

This Wednesday, Oct. 7th, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Halloween Figurine
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials: Engineered to move the human spirit.

Presenting: Beautiful Plaster figurines in three different Halloween themes for you to paint! Get yourself a beverage, sit right down and do some painting while getting to know your fellow Angelenos. Achieve the balance of being and doing in ONE NIGHT!

Your Halloween figurine will bond with your MIND and make you think about peanut brittle, pumpkins, hay rides, fall leaves, cinnamon, pie, tea flavors, creepy masks, Halloween candy, and skeletons. Such a thing might freak you out at first, but remember, it’s not “haunting” you, it’s just “reminding” you. Like an app.

It’s great to be in October, it’s great to feel the rain, it’s great to see big crazy clouds in the sky and people having hot drinks again. Rumor has it that Friday’s going to be HOT, so let’s all meet at CraftNight and hold a “weather seance” to keep temperatures down! Can’t guarantee that anyone will be listening to us, but you should probably be a little buzzed and engrossed in painting your Halloween figurine anyway.

Autumn Leaf Craft • Sept. 29th, 2015

high_yield

This Wednesday, Sept 29th, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Autumn Leaf Craft
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials: The good life at a great price. Guaranteed.
TOMORROW SEPT 28th: BET YER BOTTOM BINGO at Akbar 8pm to 10pm • Take a chance on big bottles o’ booze, boys, girls, balls and so much more!  WIN the lenticular Medusa! WIN liquor! WIN items for your life! You need it you want it you will reach a state of perfection if only for 30 seconds, please visit us!

We’re saying farewell to September with a pleasing autumn leaf craft. You will receive a pleasing fall leaf shape, and you will also have access to pleasing glittery bits with which to affix to that leaf in any style you like. This craft will take you either three minutes or three hours, it’s really up to you, it’s very freeform, you can either display it or wear it or both.

I just looked at the forecast for the next five days, and every single day said 90º which is annoyingly-stubbornly hot. We got a hell of a moon show last night, a great start to the fall season, but it’s still a bit too toasty around here. So we’re going to do something about it. We’re hoping this “in-craft-ation” loosens up some of the very determined and intense heatwaves aimed at our shiny metropolis.

We are going to manifest some Autumn no matter what temperature it is, this leaf craft isn’t just a craft, it’s an enchantment, a love song to the atmosphere to bring us a reason for eating Pumpkin Spice Latte M&Ms.

Pumpkin Spice Latte M&Ms taste kind of like regular M&Ms with dusty cinnamon potpourri and some pinecones ground up together and it’s not recommended. But if you’re feeling lazy, and the bag is already open, and you just want some chocolate: you’ll eat them… but you won’t eat very many. Here are some other flavor offerings our panel has tried this Fall, to save you the trouble:

Caramel Macchiato flavored Candy Corn from Brachs: Nope (very puzzling, because everyone raves about this one, maybe it’s just us.)

Peanut Butter Cup flavored Candy Corn from Brachs: Nope Nope Gross, lemme try another one. NOPE.

Pumpkin Spice Oreos: Hey, these are kind of okay. Kind of, like if you had to eat all of these, and one of them was even slightly harkening to autumn baking, it would be this one. I don’t know why they decided to make the cookie part be yellow, it would be just as much of a success if it was chocolate. Maybe they decided that the yellow cookie would be similar to pie crust.

Shrinky Dinks: THE SEQUEL • Sept. 23rd, 2015

piano_fantaseh_001

TONIGHT! Wednesday, Sept 23rd, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Shrinky Dinks THE SEQUEL
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials: Fall in love with cocktails all over again.
NEXT TUESDAY SEPT 29th: BET YER BOTTOM BINGO at Akbar 8pm to 10pm • Take a chance on big bottles o’ booze, boys, girls, balls and so much more!

The Autumnal Equinox IS HERE!!! We are officially IN the Fall season!
This means you will get less flack for wearing a winter scarf and boots even though it’s in the 90s this week. And speaking of this week, LAST week had all of you staying at home, watching the debates and seeking higher ground in case of tidal waves from the earthquake in Chile.

At least, that’s what I think everyone was doing, because it was so quiet, so weirdly and unnervingly quiet on Sunset Blvd. last week that we’re just going to hit the reset button and repeat last week’s craft. I NEVER DO THIS. But I feel that Shrinky Dinks is simply not to be missed. You can’t miss them. It’s criminal to keep yourself from this project. It’s so insanely cool that the three people who made Shrinky Dinks at CraftNIght last week TOTALLY FREAKED OUT. They screamed, they marveled, they were full of joy, they were elated.
I want that for you too, girl.
Seriously, I’ve got jewelry findings so you can make EARRINGS and BRACELETS.
I have templates for you to use if you need to trace.
Here is last week’s post so you can read about how cool this craft is, and believe me, I NEVER repeat Crafts two times in a row, but as a Craft Captain, I believe that this is the most responsible thing to do. Come in and make a pumpkin pendant, a charm bracelet, a choker, a pair of earrings. Make as many as you want, it’s incredible, for $3 the world is your oyster!!!!

Also: we will be serving Brach’s “Carmel Macchiato” flavored candy corn, and “Pumpkin Spice Latte” M&M’s in our quest to help you decide what best way there is to rot your teeth this fall. Join us!

Shrinky Dink Jewelry • Sept. 16th, 2015

painting_boss

This Wednesday, Sept 16th, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Shrinky Dink Jewelry
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials: Unleash the Beast

The Autumnal Equinox will arrive. Once that happens,we will launch a bountiful harvest of artsy-fartsy projects from our cornucopia of crafts! For now, however, in our last week of non-autumn, there is one glaring omission from 2015’s craft roster.

We haven’t made shrinky drinks ALL YEAR!!!
Such a thing must be remedied immediately, and this is the perfect time.
Shrinky Dinks are the ultimate test of a crafter’s faith. They really take you through an emotional journey, one that involves hard work, anticipation, abject horror, and then jubilant celebration. If you don’t know what a Shrinky Dink is, then I think you’d better get in here and make one, because these plastic miracles are game changers for your life.
Not only is it an easy project, but it’s lots of fun, looks dangerous but isn’t, and creates a fine keepsake that will last for years.
I’m going to bring jewelry parts so that you can make a pair of shrink dink earrings.
And I’ll make it possible for you to also make a matching necklace pendant or charm bracelet.
Also: Like Mod Podge, Shrinky Dinks are a “right-on-woman” craft, invented in 1973 by Betty Morris and Kate Bloomberg of Wisconsin. These two home makers and best friends were seeking to make a cool project to do with their sons who were in Cub Scouts. This highly unusual plastic styrene craft trend exploded in the 70s, and then tapered off to a nice mild existence that is kind of unbelievable. Generations of people have grown up without them, but whenever I introduce crafters to shrink dinks for the first time, they freak out yelling “How did I not grow up with this?!?”
I always try to give an understanding nod when this happens.
I’m not kidding about the therapeutic value of shrinky dinks either.
Got problems? SHRINK ‘EM!!!
I mean, you take thin plastic, draw on it, cut around it, put it in the toaster oven, and watch it transform into a durable object… it is the perfect metaphor for shrinking a problem to a size that is manageable. I mean, you can even make shrinky dinks of things you want to work on, a bracelet of “health” charms, for example, a drop of water to remind you to hydrate, a salad leaf to remember to eat your greens. You can make small totems that will act as motivators, reminders of goals, evidence of achievements.
You can really delve with shrinky dinks, they can be as meaningful or as frivolous as you need them to be, so please come in and make yourself or someone you dig a few unique pieces of hand hewn wearable art.
See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain
