The wispy high-up twirling clouds and gorgeous blue sky are just bringin’ it so much that we gotta make sun catchers! I have all this stuff to do, but I just want to feel that brisk wind in my face, watch my scarf whirl in the wintry wind as I hurry to and fro with errands aplenty! But I guess I could take a break, yeah, I guess I could do that and make a sun catcher at CraftNight in the rumpus room at Akbar.

I suppose I could have a delicious beverage and saunter over to where paint and supplies are waiting for me, and I could wax creative. I could be that  cold season character, I could build camaraderie with strangers and let out a lusty guffaw over my mini-plastic-flagon of spirits. I could reach out to a hearty band of souls on a chilly night, offering my fellowship and goodwill.

It’s National Compliment Day, and it’s National Peanut Butter Day, so already those are some pretty good topics of conversation. It wouldn’t require much effort to start talking about such things. It’s also Beer Can Day and Belly Laugh Day, one cannot lose with those good days of observation taking up squares on the calendar. Do not be hindered by the hurdles of the day, they are gone, and all that awaits you is a bevy of high-quality experiences manufactured onsite under our roof at the corner of Sunset and Fountain.

Fusion Beads!!! • January 17th, 2018

Fusion beads are here for YOU in YOUR TOWN this week! What the heck’s a fusion bead? It’s a tiny plastic cylinder, and together with other tiny plastic cylinders, you arrange them on a special peg board and then it gets IRONED to make a cool picture! It is a rollicking good project, and the PERFECT time of year to do a heat-based craft.

Because you really can’t turn back with fusion beads, once they’re fused, that’s it! If only New Year’s resolutions were so easy, you just iron’em out and it’s perfect, instant change, no more work. And that’s just it, really… a craft that reminds you of the decisions you’re making and not making, choosing and figurer-outering as moments flow through reality. It’s mindful and melty, and oh so vibrant!

Come in and FUSE your intentions for the rest of the year.

New Year and bet your bippy that we’re comin’ in HOT!!! It’s a Protest Poster Painting Party for the upcoming Los Angeles Womens March! Come on in without a THING and we’ll give you all the supplies to make yourself seen and heard when you go downtown to holler!

Our sign painting salons get kinda crowded, so we’re opening at 7pm (take advantage of Akbar’s lovely happy hour prices) for earlybird access to make your sign. We know last year was a total shit show, and we know it’s just gonna keep coming at us, this is why Linda and Lauren will be teaching a one-hour workshop at 8pm called “Resistance – How to be an Activist Without Losing Your Mind.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m really into THE TRUTH. And truth is at a premium. Whatever your feelings about the GOP and the President, information is being distorted, and it’s hard to keep a level head. The role of a free press in our democracy is vital, it’s our watchdog on behalf of the public’s interest, let us not be asleep at the wheel about this. There is a lot of messed up stuff about this weird country, but our First Amendment Right is one of the best things we ever did for ourselves.

WHY do we protest? Does it make a difference? YES IT DOES. Progress is slow, politics is frustrating, tedious, and a major pain in the ass, it takes forever. We are pushing the papers, we’re making the calls, and we’re doing the work. But we’re also THE PEOPLE, and we are the ones who will also be voting, and our discontent must be VISIBLE. Those who are elected serve us, our elected officials need a goddamn reminder that we are awake and watching.

We also need to get out there for ourselves, for each other, in solidarity. We do have power, and a great way to remember that is by seeing just how many of us are willing to spend our hard-earned leisure time continuing to protest the dumbness that is the current GOP.

So this week I’m offering you the most FUN way to work on your discontent. Get your butt in here and make a sign, we need you.

There will be treats, there will be paint, there will be cocktails, handouts, education, camaraderie, cohesion, and resolve!

We’ll have pins, magical spell jars, quilts, buttons, holiday fascinators, skincare products, stained glass jewelry, ceramic art pieces, pottery, clothing, skivvies, pasties, Sno-Globs, and scads of other fabulous gift items for you to purchase! Use the brush of your feelings to paint the questions into your heart! OR, if that’s too much this holiday season, just come to CraftNight and paint a holiday figurine, I’ll have supplies at the ready for you! The color of truth can emerge in emotions, but the color of truth can also just frickin’ be on HOLD while Los Angeles is burning, yeesh!

I think tonight is a FINE time to have a cocktail or three! As the end of the year is still rife with surprises, it’s just not always comforting knowing that anything can happen. This is where we go into high distraction mode. Take a load off, get into a lil’ painting project while making friends, listening to music in our cozy watering hole here in Silverlake.

Tonight’s craft is a smallish unpainted figurine, seasonal in nature, quite charming, you can paint it all one color, or paint it ALL the colors!
