Printing Press! • September 12th, 2018

This Wednesday, September 12th, 2018 at Akbar ’round 9ish to midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Craft Project: Printing Press!

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special: You Deserve a Break Today!
*********$3 suggested donation, please!

We’re doing a super special technique using foam and fancy ink to make art prints and cards! We’ve NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE it’s a NEW CRAFT OMG YAHHHHHH!!!

I’ll have some printed out ideas in case you’re overwhelmed by what to draw or make, the instructions will be clear and easy to follow. You can also cut out shapes and glue them onto a foam sheet and use THAT as your “printing block” to do a “matisse” inspired design.

If you’ve never been to CraftNight, I implore you, just come on in and try it. I’m really into “unplanned living” or at least trying to fit some in when one can. Things get busy, stuff stacks up, and the mind begins to feel too full, the list is endless. Once in awhile you just have to ignore the to-do list and do something spontaneous.

Every wisdom-oriented tradition says there are benefits to quieting the mind and finding ways to clear clutter in one’s gray matter. This means that even in ancient times, people were stressing out about how to best kill a bear, or not get ostracized by a tribe, or figuring out what FIRE is… etc. And they extolled the virtues of finding time to take in the wonder of life stuff even when in the midst of building pyramids, or lashing sailor knots, or churning butter or merely trying to get down to the business of staying alive.

So this week I invite you to throw out all the fears, doubts, dreams, praise, logistics, statistics and things floating around in your brain… come in, and just: make a thing. It’s inky, it’s printy, you can make something for yourself or a friend, and you can be in the now, the here, instead of distracted by all the people, places and things crowding up your psyche. Oh and… we have cocktails to get that process started for you, lol.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Protest Poster Painting Party #2! • April 12th, 2017

April 12th, 2017 from 9pm until midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Protest Poster Painting Party #2: TAX MARCH!
FREE TO THE PUBLIC (Donations Welcome) please RSVP on the FB invite so I can have enough materials!
$4 Drink specials! Akbar: Gay by Birth, Fabulous by Choice!

Yep, we have to get off our asses again.

Come on, we made it easy for you, we have brushes, paint, music and cocktails, that’s some MOMENTUM if I ever saw any! Just walk in and make your signs for the upcoming tax and science marches, because fairness in taxation is mandatory for us (so it should be mandatory for the president), and also, science is real.

I do not EVEN want to hear that you’re tired and exhausted already, it hasn’t even been 100 days. A lot of CRAP has happened already, much of it completely nightmarish and unacceptable, which is why you can’t just stay at home eating triscuits and hiding under the covers. We’ve come too far to go back, we must push forward with everything we’ve got, we’ve got to give these bozo clowns in office a fight.

CraftNight will continue to reliably create and communicate pro-democratic happenings and messages in the form of “Craftivism” to keep the energy up and our visibility consistent and strong. CraftNight’s weapon of choice is ART, pushing back against current efforts to mislead the public, disregard accepted norms, and centralize power.

The conservative republican agenda doesn’t care about art or culture, but art is integral to our society, providing the inspiration and free-thinking that inspires change. Art is one of the protective factors against authoritarianism!!! So finish your triscuits, get out from under the covers, put on your outside pants, and join us for a night of poster painting, cocktail drinking, and getting ready to fight for what you stand for on April 15th (TAX MARCH) and April 22nd (SCIENCE MARCH).

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

PS – I know many of you are also donating funds, supporting local orgs, volunteering, making calls, signing stuff, making/doing your own art to protest and tell our government they’re “doing it wrong” thank you for kicking butts!

UPCOMING CRAFTS, ETC.

April 24th – Bet Yer Bottom Bingo! • Akbar • 8pm – 10pm • Numbers, balls, boys, girls, prizes galore!

April 26th – Science Sticker Crafts! Cut-n-Color your own! Science!

TONIGHT!!! Personal Black Velvet Posters • August 3rd, 2016

uhuru

TONIGHT!!! WednesdayAugust 3rd, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT.
Project: Personal Black Velvet Posters
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: Akbar, M’m! M’m! Good!

It’s a new moon, or at least, it’s as close to a new moon as it officially was yesterday, there’s not a whole lot of moon visible in the sky right now. It’s dark and velvety, full of stars, our lovely sky, something to ponder, something to either relax or terrify you. The never ending vastness of the cosmos doesn’t trouble me much, perhaps because there’s so much minutiae to gaze at, internally and externally. This week’s installation of arty civic engagement begs you to do some coloring, and take your mind into the stratosphere and beyond, toward the final frontier.

Despite being cosmic ephemera, we’re still orbiting the sun on this wayward lil’ blue marble. We are the craziest little miracles you ever did see. Somehow, somewhere, the universe has its own boundaries, and in keeping with that theme, I’ve procured for you a little piece of the inky vastness of outer space. It’s a black velvet poster! It’s TINY! It asks that you color it in, and that’s pretty much where it stops asking anything else. There are sparkly snippets for which to add decor, your own flare, your signature style, there will be many items you can glue to your final masterpiece.

This way, if your sentient considerations freak you out and all you can think about is getting sucked out into space with no gravity, never to return… you can take your black velvet craft with you, and all will be well.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain
