TONIGHT: Bet Yer Bottom BINGO!!!! 8pm to 10pm it’s boys, balls, girls, prizes, a ramblin’ gamblin’ good time at Akbar!
TOMORROW: Wednesday March 30th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Pet Rocks!
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: Where hospitality meets you at Sunset and Fountain

Access your igneous, your sedimentary, your metamorphic self by making a PET ROCK at Akbar this Wednesday! Rocks are everywhere! We never notice them, they never get the glory and the prestige they deserve, but all of that changes this week. Rocks may seem indestructible, but in fact, they change over hundreds of years, a process we never get to see, because you know… we don’t last as long as rocks.

It has taken eons for these rocks to get to their smooth round shape, yet it will take you probably less than an hour to paint one of these rocks! Your interaction with your rock will be but a pitstop in it’s centuries-long existence. Once you get yourself to a rock and paint it, the rock will endure, as a paper weight, as a doorstop, as an attention-getting sculpture on a bookshelf, it will persist, and be a pet rock, for many years. It may even become a family heirloom! It will be your pet, your friend, your advisor during tough times, a comfort in it’s steadfast, reliable continuation.

It is rare to have a pet that will outlive you. Some people like tortoises or parrots, they have long lifespans, but none of them beat the rock. Pet rocks are quiet, friendly and inexpensive. You never have to change the cedar chips in the cage, or replace newspaper or even take a pet rock for a walk, they are just that easy to take care of, and they will never pee on the rug.

See you at the Craft Table!

Wooden Bead Jewelry Necklaces • January 13th, 2016

rain_hope

Wednesday, Jan 13th, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Wooden Bead Jewelry Necklaces
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: Tastes great, less filling!

Last week we fused our intentions with fusion beads. There’s nothing like heated plastic to make you feel accomplished and ready for 2016! Now we’re up for another Wednesday, and it’s time to make wooden bead necklaces that you paint yourself. This is a pretty straightforward craft, there are beads here in many shapes and sizes, some of them rounder, some of them more flat, there are many different kinds. They are raw wood, which means, if you want to sass them up, you’ve got to paint them! Lucky for you, we do have paint, and brushes, and all the stuff you need to create the color scheme you want for your bead necklace.

To paint a bead is to have a moment. Crafting is designed to slow you down and make you contemplate those everyday things you might not notice: a new pair of socks, a cup of tea that is the perfect temperature, the perfect fluffy brilliance of some clouds you noticed when you were walking into the grocery store. The minutia of life particles that pass you by can be forgotten so easily, this bead-painting journey I’m offering is an opportunity to pay attention to some life. Paint a bead that reminds of you of your dish soap. Paint a bead that reminds you of the friend that wrote you a poignant email. Paint a bead that resembles the weird overpriced teddy bear you saw at a department store.

Paint a story, paint your truth and then wear your truth. You have a lot of stuff going on, and it’s all interesting and weird and ghastly and meaningful and a goddamn gift, that’s right. And if someone asks you about the trippy beads you’re wearing that you painted yourself, you can look them square in the eye and say “This one reminds me of an overpriced teddy bear I saw” and they’ll say “OMG what?” next thing you know, the two of you are talking, and we have HUMAN CONNECTION. Or… they think you are a total crackpot and they steer clear of you forever and that, my friend, is also a gift, that’s right.

Share some paint, share some beads, share your stories, share despair, triumph, hopes, and dreams. It’s at CraftNight, waiting for you, a little Wednesday thing.

See you at the Craft Table!

50 Shades of Suncatchers • February 18th, 2015

muffin_top_muffin

TONIGHT! February 18th, 2015 at Akbar from 9pm until midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Suncatchers!
$3 Processing Fee
$4 Drink specials *** If you’re gonna knock yer socks off, knock ’em off with Akbar’s signature style cocktails!***
Coming up next week: Bet Yer Bottom Bingo! Tuesday February 24th [TREATS, GIRLS, HOOTCH, BOYS, BALLS, PRIZES, FANFARE, FUN!!!!]

Are you a:

  • Frosted Mini Spooner
  • Tootie Fruity
  • Marshmallow Matey
  • Honey Nut Scooter
  • Boyardee Ravo Spinner
  • Angel Soft Toilie Papel
  • Spam Anvil
  • Helicopter Pie

No matter! Whatever your personal preferences and peccadillos may be, we’ve got suncatchers for you. There are many different types. I’ve got chickies, kitties, puppies, monkeys, elephants, fishies, lions, bugs, flowers, kites, cars and one frog.
They’re made of plastic, they are clear, and the special suncatcher paint you pool within their rigid borders will be the colors and shades that you choose. Many of them come with googly eyes, and the intention with the finished product is that you’ll hang yours in a window. The sun will shine through it, and it will be CAUGHT by the suncatcher and brighten your day.
Anyone else who spies it will also have their day brightened.
This craft is so easy it’s practically fail-safe, which as you know, I do not endorse. If you have any friends who are afraid of failure, bring them to CraftNight at Akbar, because even the most unloved suncatcher is a beautiful suncatcher.

See you at the Craft Table,

Rectangular Frame with Heart • February 4th, 2015

farrahfantastik_fin

TONIGHT! February 4th, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Frame with Heart
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink specials, The Lyla, and sometimes other delicacies to whet your whistle.

It’s a frame, a wooden frame, and it’s rectangular. On the left side is carved a heart, where you would presumably put a photo, or a drawing, or some such other visual keepsake. On the right, there is solid space for you to paint or decorate however you wish. Maybe you want to put a haiku or a poem or cut out the pieces of a gnome out of felt, sitting on a rock or a dotted mushroom.

If you’re not a person who is “into” the heart shape, don’t worry, I understand. That darn ideograph has been the official symbol of romantic love since the 15th century. In the 16th century it was all the rage (fads were slower back then.) If it makes you feel better, the heart shape used to be more of a “leaf” thing, a shape found in nature, just kind of hangin’ around not meaning much of anything. This means, as per usual, that you can take or leave heart meanings and do things your way.

I mean, you’ve seen an actual heart before, a human heart, it’s full of ventricles and blowy pipes and veiny stuff. Aristotle thought your heart was your brain, and that the curly gray matter in your head was just a handy radiator. Hearts are crazy looking, they are indeed responsible for your life pulse, but in no way do they resemble the streamlined, simplistic graphic we’ve all learned to associate with candy boxes and video game lives.

Anyway, you could showcase a photo of your kitty in this frame, and it would be a great success. You could put the first dollar bill your business ever made in this frame, and it would also be a success. It’s February, you’re about to be bombarded with hearts of all shapes and sizes, and we’re here to help ease you into the season of doilies and chalky candy with this heart-y frame (haha yuk yuk, chortle) and cocktails and crafts.
