Calming Coloring! • July 11th, 2018

TONIGHT!!!! Wednesday, July 11th, 2018 at Akbar ’round 9ish to midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Calming Coloring

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special, goodness in a glass!
*********$3 suggested donation, please!

The challenge of the hot days in the southland have begun, and we’re here to address it with delicious drinks and a relaxing, calming coloring craft. We’re just gonna hang out and color, no big deal, nothing stressful or involved or exhausting or complicated.

Carl Jung was a big believer in coloring, he thought it was one of the keys to gaining self knowledge, and bringing subconscious thoughts to life. Coloring takes you away from the hot office, the annoying co-workers, the stuff you have to do, the things you’re not doing, it’s an escape, which is really good for the brain!

Coloring kinda takes you back to a time when all you ever did was color. Do you remember that?

When we were kids, it’s like they’d do ANYTHING to shut us up and please god just color something and stop hanging from the rafters. As one gets older, curricular pursuits tend to lean away from the arts, and coloring sometimes falls to the wayside, but its importance is still quite relevant in our stressed out society! Relaxing in today’s day and age is pivotal!

When’s the last time you used your brain to color on paper with fine motor skills, color picking, and organizing hues into something pleasing to your eye? Focus and concentration is harder and harder to hone, distractions are everywhere! When the mind has a lil’ playground to run around in with crayons, pencils and pens, its not unlike a mini trip to the Bahamas for one’s taxed and tired gray matter.

Pick a page, have a seat, enjoy the colors!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Craftivism: Lady Liberty Makeover! • July 4th, 2018

TONIGHT!!!! Wednesday, July 4th, 2018 at Akbar ’round 9ish to midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: CRAFTIVISM Statue o’ Liberty Lettahhhh

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special, drink it up, live yo life!
*********$3 suggested donation, please!

Can’t come to CraftNight? Doesn’t matter, you can download, print, color and SEND this craft from your very own home because it’s right HERE for you to download!

[maxbutton id=”5″]

The statue of Liberty: She’s got a good message, she is in support of our best self, the country we’d like to be, the country that at best, is a place of innovation, experimentation and open-hearted goodwill and at worst, is a place of close-minded bigotry, avarice and cruel exploitation of people and resources.

Lately, it kinda seems like it’s the latter. 2,300 children separated from their parents, and all incarcerated parts and parcels of these families would probably have a lot to say about that. I’ve organized a THREE PART Craft for tonight that is designed for you to do a teensy tiny bit of activism (about ICE and Homeland Security and your tax dollars) while still having a bit of fun.

1.) Give Lady Liberty a Makeover… I put a t-shirt on her, you can give her any slogan you want, because how long has she been wearing that oversized bathrobe?!? OMG she needs help, poor girl. Give her a beard, give her some eyeshadow, make her look fabulous!

2.) Write a letter to your CA reps on the back, make it short, sweet, respectful, and clear. I put a sample script in there if you don’t know what to write. Currently, your tax dollars are going to the incarceration of families… do you approve of that? Feel free to extrapolate if you need to in your friendly letter.

3.) Give it to me to mail for you, so that you don’t have to drag your lazy ass to the post office. There. You’re done. You will have performed a democratic task, something we, as Americans, take for granted all the time.

I also addressed apathy, cynicism and self-defeating mulligrubs in the guide I made, because it’s EASY to let the noise tell you how to be a patriot. It’s easy for you to give them the flag of your country and decide it’s JUST for narrow-minded right-wing baby jailer skinheads. IT IS NOT. This country is a place for all kinds of people, the goddamn Statue of Liberty SAYS SO. Are we going to RETURN the Statue of Liberty to the French because we’re a bunch of namby pamby wishy washy lazyheads who can’t fight the big bad bigoted blowhards? I certainly hope not!

The stars and stripes are just as much mine as yours as theirs. We take a knee to our anthem and our pledge of allegiance because somehow, in the shuffle, someone forgot that calling stupid/bigoted laws into question is one of the most American, democratic things you can do. We take a knee because shit is WRONG. We are the watchdogs of this place we call home, and yes, it’s broken, it’s not perfect, there’s a lot of stuff wrong with it. But you have to transcend the apathetic viewpoint that America is “theirs” and you are not a patriot. Do not let others define the way you love your home. Standing up to bullshit is VERY American.

You ARE a patriot, and instead of deciding the other side is gross and they can just have all 50 states, TAKE THEM BACK. Get off your duff and MAKE SOME GODDAMN CHANGE. Do it with a feather boa, do it with your writing, your donating, your calling, your art, your courage, your leotard: whatever!!!!

Also… you can love America AND Greece, and Brazil, and whatever else country… you can be poly-country, you can be pro world. Loving your country doesn’t mean you only love one place! Start with a craft… start with a craft tonight.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

RETURN of the Unicorn Pins • April 4th, 2018

This Wednesday, April 4th, 2018 at Akbar it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project:  Unicorn Pins Yayyyyyy!!!! (Paint yer own!)

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special, get yours today!
*********$3 suggested donation, we’re a scrappy non-profit alive because of you! xoxo

When we last saw our wooden lasercut unicorn profiles, they were in a box… somewhere. And then I went out of town, and my poor CraftNight Lieutenants couldn’t find them anywhere, and so the unicorns did not star as the craft for that evening. It was a bit of a SNAFU: Situation Normal: Awol Forgotten Unicorns. You know, like they say in the military.

However, I FOUND THEM! I found the UNICORNS! And they’re FUN, and you can wear one after you paint it and glue gems to it and it will just be the everlovin’ BEST. I mean, this creature has been captivating us since 5th century BCE. Marco Polo thought rhinoceroses were the ugliest unicorns he’d ever seen and was super disappointed. Here’s a direct quote from when he was rooting around in Sumatra (formerly Basma):

“The head resembles that of a wild boar, and they carry it ever bent towards the ground. They delight much to abide in mire and mud. ‘Tis a passing ugly beast to look upon, and is not in the least like that which our stories tell of as being caught in the lap of a virgin; in fact, ’tis altogether different from what we fancied.”

Still, people were drawn to the power and mystique of the majestic unicorn. As late as 1741 you could purchase powdered unicorn horn in jars in London pharmacies. Obviously, we don’t have anything as resplendent as that, but well… they are wooden shapes for painting, and the resplendence is up to you.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Mellow Valentines LOVE-IN • February 14th, 2018

This Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 from 9pm to midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
****Project: Crafts of Love

*******$4 PABST/TECATE • $5 Drink Special for Lovers and Dreamers!
*********$3 suggested donation, thank you for supporting the arts!
********* Lucky winners of my obscure trivia questions will win:
Tickets to YACHT ROCK REVUE at the El Rey Feb 17th!!! (Make no mistake, this is the FINEST tribute to soft rock in the city: It’s comedic, talented musicians, but it’s also an actual tribute situation that will make for a really wonderful evening.)

Crafts are gonna be Valentine-oriented, because I have cute choo-choos, spinny wheels, and love caterpillars and that’s not all! It’s been 73 years since Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday have collided, which seems as good a reason as any to celebrate both. Let’s do it all, hayyyyy. Here’s whassup!

Every month is Black History Month OKAY? OKAY! But we’ll be playing kickass 90s soul on the Akbar HI-FI because it sounds really damn good, and because it’s crucial to educate, empower and sustain the achievements by African Americans and the central role of blacks in U.S. history. And I wanna dance with you to “Buffalo Stance” by Neneh Cherry.

Is Valentines Day: Invented by card companies, dumb if you’re single, dumb if you’re coupled, dumb anyways, too expensive, tacky, tawdry, materialistic, signified by stupid chalky heart-shaped candy, cursed with a dippy red and pink color palette, full of unreal expectations? YES!!! YES ALL OF IT!!! WHO CARES!!!

It’s so cool to poo on Valentine’s Day, I implore you to just DO A LOVE THING because who wins if you do it? We need more love, just you know… make some. Do something good without getting caught, some kind of secret agent kindness no one can know. Forgive someone who pissed you off. Spend $10 on coffee for you and and a friend. Get your ass out and volunteer. Give your time. Give compliments. Listen to a long-winded family member. Notice someone who doesn’t think they’re noticable. Lift something heavy for somebody. Open doors. Call someone far away. CLIMB OUT OF YOUR BELLY BUTTON AND OPEN YOUR HEART.

It’s Also Ash Wednesday, which is a catholic thang, but one can still celebrate it in a nonsecular way. Many use it as a New Year’s Resolution reboot. It’s said that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert thinking about stuff, so between now and Easter, you’ve got YOUR personal opportunity to go into DEEP THOUGHT about your life JUST like Jesus, wow! Give something up: fatty snacks, criticism, sour patch kids, swearing, snapchat, smoking, religion, the news, etc.

And like WHY do that? Why suffer? Why have a difficulty when shit’s already difficult? The conscious decision by YOU to deprive YOURSELF of something that may or may not be good for you is a way of forcing yourself to contemplate WHY you like that thing/action, WHY you do it, WHAT it does for you and how that effects the world, even in the most piddly way. What kind of space are you taking up on this earth? This holiday is specifically designed to make you get past any bullshit and self-denial you’ve been harboring. Flip the record and look at the B track. Who are you and what are your priorities, anyway? Find out!

If 40 days is too much for you, there’s always Passover coming up in March, which is 8 days not 40, but no less contemplative and jarring in its own freaky way. If you’d rather shake hands with the devil, come see me at Bingo on February 18th (details below) and win glorious sinful prizes! Be bad! Gamble and support the arts!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain
