I do not care a FIG that it’s still September, I have so many wondrous Halloween crafts for October that we’re starting NOW. We have to start you off with some couture, dahling, we can’t have you wandering around in your same old rick-rack, we must have an upgrade! I’ve got what you need to gussy up your seasonal plastic jewelry collection, our selection of shiny baubles is PERFECT for these emerging autumn soirees you’ll surely be attending.

It is the night of the waning gibbous, the Harvest Moon came and went, it’s light still illuminating the dregs of everyone’s gardens. Changing moonlight calls to mind the changing nature of all the things.

We walk and drive around on a planet where small creatures fly above our heads and sing stuff. Colorful, juicy things grow on trees, you can eat some of it, it grows from dirt. There’s running water just about everywhere you go, and if you want to, you can use that water to go wash the tiredness from your face WHENEVER YOU WANT.

It’s true it’s here it’s now. It’s a goddamn miracle.

You can always think there’s bigger game to hunt, larger mountains to climb, a different “you” to build… but we like you right this moment just fine. Sweet person, you’re worth it, come make a pretty trinket for your wrist. You can craft… for inspiration.

I have sassy photo apple frames, and they’re VERY apple-oriented, because it’s Johnny Appleseed Day on September 26th! There’ll be stuff to glue onto your frames, and opportunity to take a photo to put IN the frame.I’ve got glitter glue, googly eyes, more pieces of foam so you can make your own shapes, and even some LEAF shapes, woo! You can fill your apple frame with a drawing, leave it blank, or have your photo taken and printed by CraftNight!

It’s the time of year where apples do their thing, they’re part of the rose family, just like apples and plums, and there are over 7,500 different varieties of apples. Apples are packed with fiber, the average apple contains 4.5 grams, so put down those two servings of Metamucil, because apples are way more fun to eat.

We’re SO CLOSE to the Autumnal Equinox and no it’s not your imagination the sky in Los Angeles is getting more blue. The sun is crossing the celestial equator going south, the light changes, and there ARE leaves that change color, don’t be weird we DO have seasons, you just have to go to it: Descanso Gardens, Ice House Canyon (below Mt. Baldy), LA County Arboretum, Huntington Library Botanical Gardens, Ortega Highway, Mt. Wilson Observatory, to name a few.

Printing Press! • September 12th, 2018

We’re doing a super special technique using foam and fancy ink to make art prints and cards! We’ve NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE it’s a NEW CRAFT OMG YAHHHHHH!!!

I’ll have some printed out ideas in case you’re overwhelmed by what to draw or make, the instructions will be clear and easy to follow. You can also cut out shapes and glue them onto a foam sheet and use THAT as your “printing block” to do a “matisse” inspired design.

If you’ve never been to CraftNight, I implore you, just come on in and try it. I’m really into “unplanned living” or at least trying to fit some in when one can. Things get busy, stuff stacks up, and the mind begins to feel too full, the list is endless. Once in awhile you just have to ignore the to-do list and do something spontaneous.

Every wisdom-oriented tradition says there are benefits to quieting the mind and finding ways to clear clutter in one’s gray matter. This means that even in ancient times, people were stressing out about how to best kill a bear, or not get ostracized by a tribe, or figuring out what FIRE is… etc. And they extolled the virtues of finding time to take in the wonder of life stuff even when in the midst of building pyramids, or lashing sailor knots, or churning butter or merely trying to get down to the business of staying alive.

So this week I invite you to throw out all the fears, doubts, dreams, praise, logistics, statistics and things floating around in your brain… come in, and just: make a thing. It’s inky, it’s printy, you can make something for yourself or a friend, and you can be in the now, the here, instead of distracted by all the people, places and things crowding up your psyche. Oh and… we have cocktails to get that process started for you, lol.

It’s after Labor Day, and we’re letting go of Summer kicking and screaming. Tonight we’ll make paper bag puppets, a classic activity, a way to be a friend and invent a friend in very few steps with much payoff. Paper bag puppets are great because they are compact, in that you can fold them up and take them anywhere.

Puppets are dorky, disarming, strange, dismissed… and still somehow, even in the 21st century, compelling, intriguing, heartwarming, ancient and intrinsic. Puppets have been around for thousands of years. Something primal in us just “gets” puppets. A paper bag can carry your lunch… or it can become a dear paper friend!

You never know when a paper bag puppet will come in handy for that job interview, or that Tinder date, or standing in line for tickets at the Wiltern. Puppets can be a buffer, an extension of ourselves, the imagined aspect of who we’d like to be: more confident, less critical, less distrusting, more understanding, more loving, less afraid. Make your puppet, put yer hand in it, and let it be bratty, let it say things you wouldn’t, let it be good.

After three weeks of galavanting all over Europe, I am pleased to report that I’m relaxed, tan, and EXCITED TO SEE YOU!!!

What craft do I have for you this week? I was thinking about the BIRDS and how they get hungry. We’ll be making bird feeders out of popsicle sticks! It’s easy as pie, I have a diagram for you and all the required popsicle sticks to make this work. It kind of looks like a lil’ raft, but then you build upward with your sticks so that it makes a cool box-type structure, and you’ll tie some yarn to it so it can hang from a tree or the rafters, or wherever birds like to hang out.
