It’s FALL!!! Right now, you have the most Autumn enjoyment before you: the most pumpkin spice everything, the most football, the most fall clothing, the most harvest vegetables, the most haunted houses and scary movies and pumpkin patches, the most bonfires, the most colorful leaf changes, the most county fairs, and the most fall food recipes. ‘Tis the beginning of seasonal autumnal splendor, a time of both abundance and wistfulness. Is Autumn a beginning or an ending? Can it be both? The daylight hours shrink, the darkness becomes more prevalent, yet there is also a spark. A glimmer of your creaturely nature may cause you to pause and say “I do believe I’m connected to it all!”

For pondering just that type of thought process, and to connect you with the seasonality of being human, we have really excellent Fall Suncatchers! You get one corny cartoony style one, and another hipster style geometric one! You also get a suction cup for hanging your craft in the window! This is lowbrow stained glass (plastic), it’s very uncomplicated, you’ll paint these with special suncatcher paint I ordered especially for this night! It’s easy and painty, you can talk and do this at the same time, it’s not a concentration breaker!

It is indeed time for confederate statues to GO, maybe just leave the horses, and remove the riders? It’s all about statues and nature for the rest of September over here at CraftNight.

I’ve got darling little figurines of both jungle life AND marine life, which is just as well, because holy crap! We need to remind people that NATURE IS IMPORTANT, by golly!!! Come in and paint a plaster facsimile of the choices I’ve procured for you: Hippos, Lions, Monkeys, Elephants, Fish, Dolphins, Whales, Frogs and maybe even a wayward unicorn, kitten or grasshopper, if you’re lucky!

Because I know there are too many terrible things going on in the world right now, but the National Parks turn 101 years old this Friday. And the reason that such a thing is important is that OMG it’s a miracle our monuments have lasted this long, and now these places are in very real danger. The American Antiquities Act was created in 1906 to keep buttheads from stealing ancient native artifacts from archeological sites. In more recent history, presidents have used the act to keep greedy jerks from destroying the land with bulldozers, commercial development and pollution.

In the words of my good friend, Roz Helfand

“The head of the Department of the Interior is filling his staff with mining and logging industry people. The country’s at a moral crossroads regarding how we think about environmental stewardship and long term health vs. short term jobs and convenience.”

The White House is reviewing 27 monuments set aside for conservation. These are OUR public lands and waters, you’re going to look at this list and FREAK OUT. The Giant Sequoia groves are up for review. The Mariana Trench is up for review. It’s not okay. This week and next are dedicated to learning more about what we can do to help protect and preserve these places from the oil, mining and timber industries. And of course this week and next are also dedicated to camaraderie, good times, good vibes, strong cocktails, creative energy, and being fabulous.

However shall you survive?
Never fear, CraftNight is here, with a remedy for wayward papers! Come on in, paint up your clothespin, apply a magnet, and voila: notes organized!

NOW THEN: A lot of hate has been bubbling to the surface of our nation, in a way that is terribly discouraging. Please come in and use your Akbar, your CraftNight. We are a location specializing in tolerance and acceptance. Akbar is a space of love, and very reasonably priced cocktails.

We’re a fabulously queer community hub, and we’ll not let the vile dumbness of hatred and bigots seep into our sequins, no we will not. We are not strangers to this battle, and we’re doubling down to stick up for ourselves and each other. Because the shit storm isn’t on the way, it’s not coming, it’s here.

The Southern Poverty Law Center lays out some of the solemn details of how the radical right was more successful in entering the political mainstream last year than half a century. Also, check out Dr. Walter D. Greason’s compiled materials from a class he taught on collective racial violence that can help us understand the danger that Charlottesville represents.

We have creativity, we have impact. Our numbers are huge, and our voices are LOUD. CraftNight has been rocking our first amendment rights with Protest Poster Painting Parties and other forms of Craftivism. Stay tuned for us to supply you with continued ways to unite for social justice and the planet at large.

But mainly we offer respite: an air-conditioned intermission from the 24-hour news tickers tickering tenacious tensions. Come in and have a cocktail, some art therapy, some goodness.

So there are these people in your town who paint sweet messages or images on rocks and place them in spots around Los Angeles. Tonight, you’ll do the same! Come on in and paint/preserve your rock and then leave it somewhere in the city (according to the Los Angeles Rocks official guidelines) and share it with us where you left it!

I’m back in town, and ready to make wooden amulet necklaces with you! It’s time to take beads in hand, and paint too, and make/preserve for yourself a totem for the good ol’ summertime. Because now we are August, which means 31 days of hot living, which means you’ve got to look as hot as possible.

We have so much planned, we even have some really exciting extracurricular activities set for you, including helping out with some a community project with the LA Rocks (as in actual, sedimentary, made from the earth’s crust, rocks) and FIGURE DRAWING with Dr. Sketchy!!!

For now, however, we’ll set you up with a wooden shape and the hand drill, and you’ll paint/adorn the center of your necklace, and then fashion its strings with beads, baubles and what-nots from the collection I’ve prepared for you! It’s soooo much funnnn ahhhhh maaaaaa gahhhhhh you will like it. AND I’ll have the air conditioning on, you can be nice and cool, with a cocktail, and your friends, and the night’s gonna be perfect. Did you see the moon? Go look at the moon, then come see us.
