The statue of Liberty: She’s got a good message, she is in support of our best self, the country we’d like to be, the country that at best, is a place of innovation, experimentation and open-hearted goodwill and at worst, is a place of close-minded bigotry, avarice and cruel exploitation of people and resources.

Lately, it kinda seems like it’s the latter. 2,300 children separated from their parents, and all incarcerated parts and parcels of these families would probably have a lot to say about that. I’ve organized a THREE PART Craft for tonight that is designed for you to do a teensy tiny bit of activism (about ICE and Homeland Security and your tax dollars) while still having a bit of fun.

1.) Give Lady Liberty a Makeover… I put a t-shirt on her, you can give her any slogan you want, because how long has she been wearing that oversized bathrobe?!? OMG she needs help, poor girl. Give her a beard, give her some eyeshadow, make her look fabulous!

2.) Write a letter to your CA reps on the back, make it short, sweet, respectful, and clear. I put a sample script in there if you don’t know what to write. Currently, your tax dollars are going to the incarceration of families… do you approve of that? Feel free to extrapolate if you need to in your friendly letter.

3.) Give it to me to mail for you, so that you don’t have to drag your lazy ass to the post office. There. You’re done. You will have performed a democratic task, something we, as Americans, take for granted all the time.

I also addressed apathy, cynicism and self-defeating mulligrubs in the guide I made, because it’s EASY to let the noise tell you how to be a patriot. It’s easy for you to give them the flag of your country and decide it’s JUST for narrow-minded right-wing baby jailer skinheads. IT IS NOT. This country is a place for all kinds of people, the goddamn Statue of Liberty SAYS SO. Are we going to RETURN the Statue of Liberty to the French because we’re a bunch of namby pamby wishy washy lazyheads who can’t fight the big bad bigoted blowhards? I certainly hope not!

The stars and stripes are just as much mine as yours as theirs. We take a knee to our anthem and our pledge of allegiance because somehow, in the shuffle, someone forgot that calling stupid/bigoted laws into question is one of the most American, democratic things you can do. We take a knee because shit is WRONG. We are the watchdogs of this place we call home, and yes, it’s broken, it’s not perfect, there’s a lot of stuff wrong with it. But you have to transcend the apathetic viewpoint that America is “theirs” and you are not a patriot. Do not let others define the way you love your home. Standing up to bullshit is VERY American.

You ARE a patriot, and instead of deciding the other side is gross and they can just have all 50 states, TAKE THEM BACK. Get off your duff and MAKE SOME GODDAMN CHANGE. Do it with a feather boa, do it with your writing, your donating, your calling, your art, your courage, your leotard: whatever!!!!

Also… you can love America AND Greece, and Brazil, and whatever else country… you can be poly-country, you can be pro world. Loving your country doesn’t mean you only love one place! Start with a craft… start with a craft tonight.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

How’s your soul’s place in the fabric of things? Well, we’ve got sun catchers at CraftNight because it’s officially SUMMER and while things are gonna get hot, crafts are going to be cool as always. These lil’ clear plastic keepsakes are of various themes, and you fill them in with suncatcher paint, wait for them to dry, and then you hang them up in front of a window and it’s just lovely.

It’s that time of year when Los Angeles comes ALIVE. It’s time for pool parties, cookouts, tank tops, flip flops, stargazing, tan lines, hammocks, and all the summer lovin’ you can handle. Step into that summer light and shine. Allow light and warmth to find you, let’s get into expansion, sunshine, life with fervor. Because you’re wild and free, forget about someday, that shit’s just air and moonbeams, you’ve got now, let’s have some goddamn fun.

Send in the Clowns • June 20th, 2018

TONIGHT!!! Wednesday, June 20th, 2018 at Akbar it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Send in the CLOWNS

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special, the Silverlake Treat!

CLOWNS!

Clowns! They remind you to play!

Clowns! They are the jesters of our times!

Clowns! They hide in gutters and EAT you when you decide to say hello to them!

How do you feel about clowns? I have lots of clown FACES. It’s just the faces, aren’t you delighted and excited? Some of them are goofy looking clown faces, others are more romantic-looking, more harlequin or mardi gras style. They’re made of plaster, you get to pick one from the variety and paint one for your very own.

Clowns are complex, they’ve always been unpredictable. They wear makeup so you can’t tell what their expression is, they do silly things or slapstick things… sometimes they’re drunk or chase people with knives! Woo!

Anyway, come in and paint a plaster clown face, it ain’t gonna killya… or will it? Eeeeeek!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

JULY 4th >>> WEDNESDAY >>> 12 to 5 *** Haircuts, hot dogs and HELP! CraftNight will supply information on what you can do about helping families being detained at the border. Postcards for you to mail to reps, and ways to donate and help.

There are still over 4,000 children who won’t be reunited with their parents even after Trump’s new executive order. People coming across the border that are being criminalized, incarcerated, and traumatized are fleeing death and violence in their own countries. Trump’s new executive order won’t stop people from seeking asylum.

Tonight! PAINTY PAINT! • June 13th, 2018

TONIGHT: Wednesday, June 13th, 2018 at Akbar it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Pride Paper Craft!

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special, it’s heating up, cool down with a beverage!
*********$3 suggested donation, please!

The colors of the rainbow will be on FULL DISPLAY tonight, ready for you to paint a project of your choosing. It’s GAY PRIDE MONTH so we’re embracing HUES. I’m talkin’ about the colors you see in the world, the colors you see in yourself, the colors of your friends, lovers, families. Come in and get a brush and touch color, bring color to life in the spirit of the rainbow of the things you hold dear from the past, the present, the future.

Because there’s something to be said for appreciating and eyeing color, but it’s another to make color, to use it. When you interact with a spectrum of your own creating, access to knowing attaches you to the world. Touching colors brings heart to seeing, because you’re part of it, you really really are! You can paint in solid colors, or add patterns, or paint a specific scene, object, or message. Perhaps you’ll give someone the keepsake you’ve made, or you’ll keep it for yourself.

As you paint, and if you can, see if you can free what’s been asleep at your core. Maybe it’s just annoyance at traffic, maybe it’s the scone you didn’t eat because you’re trying not to eat too many scones, perhaps it’s words you wanted to say but kept to yourself, all of these things are profound and worth exploration. We have big things and small things, we’re people… there are a lot of us, and it’s complicated.

If you have developed a callus over some part of your thinking, see if you can squeak some of those squashed or hidden emotions to the surface… with paint. It doesn’t have to be a big ol’ thang, it can be imperfect and silly or even kinda bratty. Whatever it is, challenge yourself to make it be real, an unfolding of your heart into the life you’re living.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain
