A Rip-roarin’ rustic craft project awaits you this week, one you can really sink your teeth into, one that’s pretty ingenious, thanks to Vero Lebron, who will be leading this week’s CraftNIght! She will take you through the steps to help you make the coolest note holder YET. You’ll be turning an every day object into a fabulous note holder!

Paint it, decorate it, put a magnet on the back of it, voila, your snappy trappy note holder will hold all of those annoying loose papers in the kitchen! It’s a spot for receipts, a place for wayward postcards, you can keep one on your desk to keep track of forms!

Also, the S’more Gnome will be with us this Wednesday evening, making sure your sweet tooth is well-attended and given enough marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate. Nothing says summer fun like s’mores! You can tell everyone you went camping and you never went outside. If you TRY our “archery” game and you get a bullseye, you will a FREE DRINK!!!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Rectangular Frame with Heart • February 4th, 2015

farrahfantastik_fin

TONIGHT! February 4th, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Frame with Heart
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink specials, The Lyla, and sometimes other delicacies to whet your whistle.

It’s a frame, a wooden frame, and it’s rectangular. On the left side is carved a heart, where you would presumably put a photo, or a drawing, or some such other visual keepsake. On the right, there is solid space for you to paint or decorate however you wish. Maybe you want to put a haiku or a poem or cut out the pieces of a gnome out of felt, sitting on a rock or a dotted mushroom.

If you’re not a person who is “into” the heart shape, don’t worry, I understand. That darn ideograph has been the official symbol of romantic love since the 15th century. In the 16th century it was all the rage (fads were slower back then.) If it makes you feel better, the heart shape used to be more of a “leaf” thing, a shape found in nature, just kind of hangin’ around not meaning much of anything. This means, as per usual, that you can take or leave heart meanings and do things your way.

I mean, you’ve seen an actual heart before, a human heart, it’s full of ventricles and blowy pipes and veiny stuff. Aristotle thought your heart was your brain, and that the curly gray matter in your head was just a handy radiator. Hearts are crazy looking, they are indeed responsible for your life pulse, but in no way do they resemble the streamlined, simplistic graphic we’ve all learned to associate with candy boxes and video game lives.

Anyway, you could showcase a photo of your kitty in this frame, and it would be a great success. You could put the first dollar bill your business ever made in this frame, and it would also be a success. It’s February, you’re about to be bombarded with hearts of all shapes and sizes, and we’re here to help ease you into the season of doilies and chalky candy with this heart-y frame (haha yuk yuk, chortle) and cocktails and crafts.

See you at the Craft Table,

You’ve Been FRAMED! • February 5th, 2014

cant_stop_da_mustache

Tonight! Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 from 9pm to midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Premium Quality Wooden Frames for your LIFE
$2 Donation, por favor
$4 DRINK SPECIAL!!! >>> Be immersed! Let “The Lyla” sate your thirst!

These frames are not those tiny wooden frames from IKEA, they are big and beautiful, with a wide border for lots of painting, gluing, etc. I am bringing the Polaroid, for an extra buck, I’ll take your photo and you can put it in your frame! Instant Gift!

Or, I dunno, go home and take 101 selfies of your junk with your phone, print out the 100th and put it in your frame for that special someone. However you decide to use your frame, it will be an unforgettable keepsake for years to come! If you’re feeling less frisky, make something glamorous for the mantel that won’t make you blush in front of any family members.

ALSO: It is World Nutella Day, and while I’m not totally sure what that means, we’ll be celebrating tonight with something edible starring (you guessed it) Nutella! Yay Italy!

ALSO: Next week’s CraftNight (FEB 12)  is DELUXE and Valentine-Oriented, Visit the Event and RSVP!!! (Gotta have enough tater tots)

In the photo below, inside the locket (right side) is “Lil’ Sad Rock from Puente” made by crafter, Little Taffy, and the googly eyes (left side) were glued to the forehead of longtime Akbar family member, Nat, photo by NJ Tucker.

March 28th, 2012 • Craft Stick Flowers and MORE!

This Wednesday March 28th, 2012 from 9pm until 12-ish at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Craft Stick Flowers and MORE!
$2 Processing fee, please
$4 Cosmo Drink Special – Fill it to the rim with whim!

We were very “painty” last week to foster your inner painter, and this week we’re getting “buildy” so you can nurture your inner architect.

At the beginning of the CraftNight weekly brainstorm, I found someone’s internet plan about how to make super adorable flowers out of popsicle sticks (or “craft sticks” as the lingo goes).
But it seemed very limiting to only make flowers at CraftNight, when popsicle sticks are so versatile! Craft sticks are like tinkertoys in their diversity, you can build a box, a godseye (yes, I’ll bring some yarn!), a planter for a tiny plant, a pencil cup, a recipe holder, a birdhouse, a frame, a valet for your keys and wallet, a sign, an ornamental decoration, the plethora of items you can make is mind-bogglingly vast!

The other thing is, these little sticks, that have been holding up the nation’s popsicles since the early 1900s are made from birch wood. I don’t know if you know about glassine paper… commonly used in the wonderful crinkly translucent envelopes the post office used to package any stamps you may have purchased. Martha Stewart likes to make a big deal out of glassine envelopes and why not, they have an unmatched texture and sheen. Anyway, glassine paper is made not from any ol’ wood but from birch wood. Birch wood finds a way to make life lovely on many different levels, and so we send a hefty salute to it’s usefulness at the month’s end.

See you at the Craft Table!
