Hot Season Pinwheel • July 18th, 2018

The 18th is National Hot Dog Day, National Sour Candy Day, and Nelson Mandela International Day! I thought you might want to celebrate accordingly with your very own wind-powered-color-your-own hot season pinwheel! The pinwheel comes with its own colorful stick, so you can run around like a fairy godmother, granting wishes, or, if the hot weather turns everyone and everything cantankerous, you can just sweetly beat the crap out of any obstacle that stands in your way.

These are “jumbo” pinwheels: impressive, grand and ostentatious! A sweet breeze will really make this thing put on a show! I’ll have all the decorative items available at your leisure, you can deck this thing out and attend garden parties with glamorous aplomb. The temperature here in our lovely metropolis is in the high 80s, which SOME people call hot. I’ve been calling it hot… but I know that’s not actually hot, I’m being dramatic. What we’ve been experiencing lately is a dainty hot, where you can still turn on the grill or function as a normal human being. We had a little preview in early July to show us what’s truly on the menu for upcoming months.

And because I know what’s coming, let me just say to you: Guuuurl, you’re gonna need a pinwheel. Because when August and September hit Los Angeles, the other shoe drops and EVERYTHING is cancelled. You will feel like you need a forklift to spatula your body up and out into the world to get stuff done.

A decorative pinwheel will tell you where the breeze is, should the fates be courteous and send us one. It will also remind you of a time when you had the energy to make a pinwheel, evoking those cooler days, remembering that this too shall pass.

Notes notes notes, little pieces of paper all over the place and nothing to control it!
Whatever will you do?
However shall you survive?
Never fear, CraftNight is here, with a remedy for wayward papers! Come on in, paint up your clothespin, apply a magnet, and voila: notes organized!

NOW THEN: A lot of hate has been bubbling to the surface of our nation, in a way that is terribly discouraging. Please come in and use your Akbar, your CraftNight. We are a location specializing in tolerance and acceptance. Akbar is a space of love, and very reasonably priced cocktails.

We’re a fabulously queer community hub, and we’ll not let the vile dumbness of hatred and bigots seep into our sequins, no we will not. We are not strangers to this battle, and we’re doubling down to stick up for ourselves and each other. Because the shit storm isn’t on the way, it’s not coming, it’s here.

The Southern Poverty Law Center lays out some of the solemn details of how the radical right was more successful in entering the political mainstream last year than half a century. Also, check out Dr. Walter D. Greason’s compiled materials from a class he taught on collective racial violence that can help us understand the danger that Charlottesville represents.

We have creativity, we have impact. Our numbers are huge, and our voices are LOUD. CraftNight has been rocking our first amendment rights with Protest Poster Painting Parties and other forms of Craftivism. Stay tuned for us to supply you with continued ways to unite for social justice and the planet at large.

But mainly we offer respite: an air-conditioned intermission from the 24-hour news tickers tickering tenacious tensions. Come in and have a cocktail, some art therapy, some goodness.

TONIGHT!!! Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 from 9pm until midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: ROCK Painting Party with The Los Angeles Rocks!

So there are these people in your town who paint sweet messages or images on rocks and place them in spots around Los Angeles. Tonight, you’ll do the same! Come on in and paint/preserve your rock and then leave it somewhere in the city (according to the Los Angeles Rocks official guidelines) and share it with us where you left it!

That’s pretty much all there is to it, I’ll have lots of fun glittery, googly arty bits for you to decorate and paint with, quite a compelling jamboree to attend.

I’m back in town, and ready to make wooden amulet necklaces with you! It’s time to take beads in hand, and paint too, and make/preserve for yourself a totem for the good ol’ summertime. Because now we are August, which means 31 days of hot living, which means you’ve got to look as hot as possible.

We have so much planned, we even have some really exciting extracurricular activities set for you, including helping out with some a community project with the LA Rocks (as in actual, sedimentary, made from the earth’s crust, rocks) and FIGURE DRAWING with Dr. Sketchy!!!

For now, however, we’ll set you up with a wooden shape and the hand drill, and you’ll paint/adorn the center of your necklace, and then fashion its strings with beads, baubles and what-nots from the collection I’ve prepared for you! It’s soooo much funnnn ahhhhh maaaaaa gahhhhhh you will like it. AND I’ll have the air conditioning on, you can be nice and cool, with a cocktail, and your friends, and the night’s gonna be perfect. Did you see the moon? Go look at the moon, then come see us.

CraftNight Lieutenant, Jazz, will be at the help this week, hosting a freaky, foamy night of KAN KOOZIE KRAZY!!! What the heck’s a kan koozie? It’s one o’ those cylindrical enclosures you put on your canned beverage to keep it cool while you walk around at the beach, the campfire, the backyard soirée!

Because it’s not hot yet. I mean… the temperatures we’ve seen around here are warm, yah, sure they are, but August and September are nigh, and THAT, my friend, that is some summertime madness. That’s when everyone breaks out the Raymond Chandler quote about how hot it is, when parking lot fights happen more frequently and more angrily, cats PANT. When it reaches that apex, you just wish you could peel your skin right off your bod to escape the concrete-reflecting fiery heat.

Decorate your kan koozie and impress everyone at your next social event. No one will tell you to your face that they’re jealous of the custom job you’ve done on your new piece of gear but they are extremely envious and wish they were you, believe me. They will seethe quietly and roll their eyes pretending they don’t care, but really they’ll be eating their hearts out. Because you’ll be beating the heat all handmade style, flaunting your glittery, bauble-laden, googly-eyed, beaded brazen masterpiece of an ice cold beverage.
