It’s SPRING!!! The Vernal Equinox is HERE and we’ve got raindrop showers on the way, let’s get ready with some FLOWERS! I’ve got some sweet terra cotta pots for you to paint, put gems on ’em, decorate woooo! You can decide if you want to put a starter plant in your newly decorated container or begin from seed. It’s the time of year where you should smell like dirt… even just a little bit.

So yah, Persephone, the daughter of Demeter and Zeus is BACK! Dusting off all that charcoal sediment from hangin’ with smoldering hubby down in Hades, she’s here with flower power, and we’re just so glad to see her! She’ll return to being Queen of the Underworld later. Right now, she’s all about the blooms. The earth sings with new growth, the air swirls with pollen, Orion guards the night skies. The many daring birds, all the dutiful bees, every bug you know is ready to party.

March 28th – Spring Bird Lacing Craft and AKBAR DOJO! SELF DEFENSE CLASS with Cory Klink! RSVP here on the FB Event! 
Bold Alchemy Queer Self Defense brings you the Protect Your Neck class!!! This 1 hour Self Defense class with Cory Klink will teach you how to use every day objects to defend yourself! Bring your favorite high heels, that crazy sharp crystal on your altar, or a good old fashioned baseball bat and learn to use what you have with you if being attached! We will also cover basic kicks, punches, stances and meditation. Students are encouraged to wear what they feel expresses themselves best and feels comfortable to move in. Bold Alchemy is a trauma focused self defense program that aims to empower, arm and heal queer, trans and poc humans. Unicorn Pins! • March 7th, 2018

You’re an international person of mystery and intrigue, and even those who have never met you will be drawn to you… because you’ll brandish your self-painted unicorn pin upon your attire and spellbind every soul who gazeth in your direction. True, some may sneer, but only to feign their desperate jealousy, their envy and avarice amplified by your golden, unconcerned countenance.

These flat wooden silhouettes are not the entire unicorn, but rather just the head:

We’ll hand you one, paint it with stripes, dots, anything! Embellish with gems or glitter and MORE, and then we’ll put a pin-back on it and voila, you’ve got quite the beautiful unicorn pin, Prêt-à–Porter! 

Human beings have been fascinated by unicorns since forever ago, the Greeks filed them under Natural History (not mythology) because they absolutely believed unicorns were real, alive and frolicking somewhere in India. Since then, we’ve learned some things, calmed down a little and decided that well… okay FINE. Unicorns probably aren’t real… but we’re open to being proven wrong! A unicorn’s blessing is said to give you the power to succeed at any endeavor you attempt! Unicorns are signifiers of the ideals of hope and change!

When you wear unicorn fashion, you’re saying that you’re into certain things. It means you’re into whimsical notions. It also means you’re into the rare and unique and exquisite. Unicorns are capable of just about anything. Nothing says “body glitter” and “sparkly nail decals” like unicorns, fighting darkness, and bleak, oppressive regimes with experimentation, innovative ideas, and LOTS of froofy colors. Come in and get one, make it yours for March, and then let it be your totem for powering you up to clean the house, rock a new hairstyle, flirt with abandon, endless possibilities!

Birch Disk Magnets! • February 28th, 2018

Birch disks! They’re little rounds cut from tree branches, they’re so natural and made of wood! I have paint, and you can spend some time making one into a magnet! I’m also bringing Mod Podge, so that you can preserve it for posterity. It’s the LAST day of February, with chilly air outside, but warm and comfy fun inside, with people, drinks, music, and of course, Crafts!

And just a lil’ reminder: You can bring your very OWN project that you’re working on to CraftNight! Doing some knitting? Working on your zine? Painting a frame for your bathroom or creating something sweet for someone neat-o? Do it here! Bring your stuff, set up shop and have company while you work! We’re your own little corner of free-spirited enjoyment, a cocktail klatch of conversation, getting to know others, and making stuff while the ambiance percolates around you. It’s designed for both the bold and the shy, and it’s designed with supplies in mind if you don’t have any of your own for which to make a craft. Use our supplies or use ours, either way, we’re excited to see you.

I have these adorable but no-frills snowman boxes that are kind of TOO EASY to make. This means an extra side project will also be offered, because honestly, in the time you have to make this craft, you won’t even be halfway through your vodka soda, or redbull, or whatever you’re drinking!

 

2018 marks the 16th year of CraftNight in service, and tonight will be a Full Blue Moon Winter Session, so I’m quite giddy about that! Let us celebrate kinship and having January togetherness while making snowman boxes when it’s been weirdly hot outside! Maybe if we make enough snowman boxes, winter will come back and be cold!

Suncatchers • January 24th, 2018

This Wednesday, JANUARY 24th, 2018 from 9pm to midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!

The wispy high-up twirling clouds and gorgeous blue sky are just bringin’ it so much that we gotta make sun catchers! I have all this stuff to do, but I just want to feel that brisk wind in my face, watch my scarf whirl in the wintry wind as I hurry to and fro with errands aplenty! But I guess I could take a break, yeah, I guess I could do that and make a sun catcher at CraftNight in the rumpus room at Akbar.

I suppose I could have a delicious beverage and saunter over to where paint and supplies are waiting for me, and I could wax creative. I could be that  cold season character, I could build camaraderie with strangers and let out a lusty guffaw over my mini-plastic-flagon of spirits. I could reach out to a hearty band of souls on a chilly night, offering my fellowship and goodwill.

It’s National Compliment Day, and it’s National Peanut Butter Day, so already those are some pretty good topics of conversation. It wouldn’t require much effort to start talking about such things. It’s also Beer Can Day and Belly Laugh Day, one cannot lose with those good days of observation taking up squares on the calendar. Do not be hindered by the hurdles of the day, they are gone, and all that awaits you is a bevy of high-quality experiences manufactured onsite under our roof at the corner of Sunset and Fountain.
