Project: Halloween Necklace!

$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: Silverlake’s best Address
CURRENTLY ON VIEW Gothtober.com is up and running! See the world’s only countdown calendar to the days of Halloween, brought to you by SparkleBlob (which also powers CraftNight and other arty things…)

Mother Nature has been roasting and toasting us this Halloween season, enough to make you want to freeze one’s caramel apple and put it on your face to cool down. My goodness these temperatures have been soaring. Meanwhile, we’re going to have the A/C on full blast, and we’ll be playing fun stuff on the Akbar Jumbotron, serving some snacks to go with your drink special, and we will be making Halloween necklaces.

Human beings have been wearing necklaces ever since we figured out how to string stuff together. Necklaces made of stones, animal fangs, teeth, feathers, claws, shells, etc. still hang on wearers buried in ancient tombs. Necklaces stood for status, or royalty, nowadays people wear them for fashion, or for sentimental value, religious reasons, or to make a statement. So we’re giving you an opportunity to make STATEMENT JEWELRY tonight.

Feelin’ tough? Feelin’ pretty? Feelin’ haunted or depraved, strange and eerie? Feelin’ Fun? Are you feelin’ like a Halloween monster goddess? Are you a high priest or an art wizard? Are you the ultimate Halloween romantic?

A good necklace is an accent piece for a well-dressed person, just like a ring or a scarf or necktie or a good set of cufflinks. You’re not going to wear your Halloween necklace everyday, you’ll mix it up with your other pendants and the like. But this is special. This is your message to the masses, worn around your neck to advertise your individuality.

There’s one time of year where you can really overcrowd your look with bizarre accoutrement, so get into it, we dare you. Adorn yourself distastefully, put together a necklace that helps complete or create your fall fashion look.

This Wednesday, Oct. 7th, 2015 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Halloween Figurine
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials: Engineered to move the human spirit.

Presenting: Beautiful Plaster figurines in three different Halloween themes for you to paint! Get yourself a beverage, sit right down and do some painting while getting to know your fellow Angelenos. Achieve the balance of being and doing in ONE NIGHT!

Your Halloween figurine will bond with your MIND and make you think about peanut brittle, pumpkins, hay rides, fall leaves, cinnamon, pie, tea flavors, creepy masks, Halloween candy, and skeletons. Such a thing might freak you out at first, but remember, it’s not “haunting” you, it’s just “reminding” you. Like an app.

It’s great to be in October, it’s great to feel the rain, it’s great to see big crazy clouds in the sky and people having hot drinks again. Rumor has it that Friday’s going to be HOT, so let’s all meet at CraftNight and hold a “weather seance” to keep temperatures down! Can’t guarantee that anyone will be listening to us, but you should probably be a little buzzed and engrossed in painting your Halloween figurine anyway.

Visit Gothtober! Why? Special Blood Moon Craft Project Download by Billy Kheel for DAY 8, but also, in the words of Homo Jedi, Wendell Jones:

See super cool horror videos by local tree hugging, eco friendly, anti-authoritarian, often feminist or LGBTQ malcontents and some occasionally very cool kids, all who are intent on destroying normality! Go to the link and each day a new treat will be revealed!

It’s a FULL MOON and it’s the BLOOD HUNTER MOON on October 8th! What does it mean to have a Blood Moon? Lunar eclipse, nothing more, except it is the fourth and last of the year, and some believe that this has special significance, and maybe it does!

Some people (not us) will see the deep red eclipse covering the moon, but for the rest of us, we’re just going to gaze at that bright white globe and enjoy it’s brilliant ghostly light.

It’s early yet in the month, so this week, I’ve got Halloween frames for you to make for yourself or a loved one. I’ll have the polaroid to take a snapshot of you ($1 please, polaroid film is expensive!) and you can mail your keepsake far away or hand it over to someone who will be delighted to have it!

This moon is also called the Falling Leaf Moon or Shedding Moon, and indeed, have you noticed the extra dryness in the weather, the crackle, the sharp crisp blue of the sky? Winter is on the horizon, and though it is hot, it’s going to cool down, change is in the air. It is said that the veil between the spirit world and our world is at its thinnest in October.

See you at the Craft Table,

Radioactive Halloween Sand Crafts • October 17th, 2012

This Wednesday, October 17th, 2012 from 9pm(ish) until 12(or later) at Akbar,  it’s CRAFTNIGHT!

$4 Cosmopolitans: For people who share a taste for excitement
Massage Therapist Sky on Duty: Bodywork Special: $14 for 15 minutes, try it!
Aztec Chocolate Chip Spice Cookies & Satanic Cupcakes from Vero’s Gothtober Baking Adventures!

ONGOING Gothtober Countdown Calendar by yours truly and 31 fantastic artists on the internet for you to see! GO SEE!

Wouldn’t you know it, I was walking down a very dangerous uninhibited alley full of horrible smells and dumpsters and canisters full of bubbling slime, just the kind of place I like to walk alone and explore. Right next to a canister of what could only be described as fetid rotting snot was a very old and decrepit curiously interesting cardboard box, covered in “DO NOT OPEN” and “PROPERTY OF MARIE CURIE” labels. It was scuffed with grease stains and had the faint smell of clorox, and I was strangely, magnetically pulled toward its contents. I knelt down, pulled opent the flaps. There was kind of an explosion, a loud “MON DIEU! Vous avez fait une erreur énorme! IMBECILE!”  (too bad I don’t speak French) and sort of a weird apparition of a women flew out of the box, she was kind of old-timey looking and green, but definitely irritated. Honestly, I think my eyes were just playing tricks on me. I was quite startled by this event, but managed to calm myself and get back to the box and thank goodness, because what a delight!

What a craft find, tons of packets of weirdly questionable magical glow-in-the-dark skeleton and tombstone crafts! These are so easy to make, you just “peel to reveal” the adhesive and then pour on the colored sand and voila, you have yourself an exciting project. I’m not sure if it’s safe to use these, I scoured the rest of the alley and found some lizard gizzards and some rat whiskers, but nothing else was as cool as these radioactive glowy sand crafts.

UPCOMING COOL THINGS:

TONIGHT: Ian MacKinnon’s “Battlestar GAY-lactica” at Akbar! $5 show starts at 8! (my sweetheart, Coral Lobera, is going to perform! Woo!)

THURSDAY: SPECTERS, SPIRITS, & SPIES! A Night of Spooky Storytelling at The Last Bookstore (I’m performing! Come get spooked!)

NEXT THURSDAY: Wig Out!™ Get Your 7 Year Anniversary Zombie Ball On! (I’ll be good and dead, come see me…)

CandyCornWitchMouseOrnament • Oct. 3rd, 2012

This Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012 from 9pm(ish) until 12(or later) at Akbar,  it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: CandyCornWitchMouseOrnament
$2 Processing Fee
$4 Cosmopolitans: If you ‘ve got the time, we’ve got the cosmo.

Your Craft Captain is also Head Candy Corn of Gothtober.com so please visit the Gothtober Countdown Calendar and click on one of the 31 pumpkins for a special treat. It’s basically an advent calendar, but for Halloween instead of Xmas. It’s online, it’s free, it’s weird, it’s completely in the spirit of something you shouldn’t be doing, so therefore you should do it immediately.

October’s bright blue weather is here, which means we’re going to pack in as many Halloween crafts as we can, starting with the CandyCornWitchMouseOrnament. It’s a Candy Corn. It’s a Mouse. It’s a Witch. It’s an Ornament! It’s a Mouse! It’s an Ornament! It’s a Candy Corn! It’s a Witch! It’s FOUR things in ONE! Can you handle it? It’s a total multitasking megastar of a craft! You think you’re busy? Try being one of America’s favorite candies, as well as being one of America’s most reviled pests, while also being one of the nation’s most feared supernatural beings AND THEN bring it all together to morph into something everyone likes: a charming, non-threatening non-devil worshipping adorable tchotchke for home decor.

Have you friends of the spacey variety, hang this weird and cheery decoration on their doorknob to remind them that All Hallow’s Eve is less than 30 days away!
