I’m going to play easy listening, and we’re going to settle in with some beautiful shiny glittery coloring sheets.
They have themes, these coloring sheets.
Some of them have foxes on them, some of them are about mermaids, others tell the story of the primeval world.
We’re taking it easy, because the 4th of July weekend was action-packed!

Besides, there’s such an emphasis on “blazing your own trail” and “re-inventing the wheel” and “coming up with your specially voiced plan” and I have every belief that we’re all doing that… but sometimes it’s just nice to not have to run every goddamn thing.
Sometimes it’s nice to chill out in a basic way and relax!

So tonight, there is a decidedly uncomplicated project waiting for you at CraftNight.

Have a cocktail, experience the air conditioning, empty your mind of the day’s kerfuffles, chill out with a chilled beverage, and color inside the lines.

With the LA River now hosting boating expeditions and fences around Echo Park Lake coming down for the great unveiling on June 15th, the last thing CraftNight wants is for you to be stuck rudderless on the open waters! Pick from THREE different watercraft made from wood that you will assemble, paint and name for your glorious adventures in the tub, the pool, the river, the lake, wherever there’s agua! I have a garden variety sailboat, a schooner-type thingy with three sails, and a battleship for when you mean business. Ship supply is limited, first come first serve and first choice. If you get here too late for a ship… there is always an auxiliary craft! Come and play!

Remember now: Before Stonewall and the stiletto heard ’round the world, we who are just fine were deemed anything BUT that by the dull myopic majority of fear and bigotry. Even now we’re still fighting the good fight for our rights as old castles crumble and new ways that make the human race just a bit more bearable are seeing victory. 8pm Ian MacKinnon’s Gay Historgy 3 at Silverlake’s Spirit Studio uses his time-traveling chaps and sexy genie guide to school you about gay history in the way you’ve always wanted!

SUNDAY
Get your ass out of bed, shake off that hangover and get to the GAY PRIDE PARADE! 11am

HAND TURKEYS • November 14th, 2012

Project: Hand Turkeys, a CraftNight Classic!

All you need to make a hand turkey is: Your hand, markers, paper, maybe some glue, an Akbar cosmo, your hand…

The “Hand Turkey” is a CraftNight classic, we always make them without fail so that you may wow your house guests, friends, relatives, whatever, with a handmade holiday decoration made especially by you. Just think about it: Your HAND can be TRACED and turned into a TURKEY. It’s good to be alive!

Once you perform that small task, there is nothing to stop you from augmenting and decorating your hand turkey to suit your personal expression. You can put boots on your turkey, make it a french maid turkey, a hand turkey talking on the phone with a foot turkey, a bearded turkey, musclebound turkey, extreme turkey, vulcan turkey, however you want to make it, it will never be replicated, because it’s your hand, and it’s unique, just like you!

But you know what? I’m going to up the ante this year, since Thanksgiving is about many things, but whether you’re vegetarian, vegan or not, it’s all about EATING. I’m going to bring some clear contac paper, and you can turn your hand turkey portrait into a PLACEMAT. This option is purely at your discretion, not mandatory in any way, but it IS an exciting way to make dinner look even weirder  and more festive than previous Thanksgiving meals. Heck, make one for each guest at the table!

The next week, for November 21st, in lieu of CraftNight, it will be Akbar’s Celebrated “PIE” featuring delicious grooves and delicious people to dance with before the “Gobblepocalypse” hits us with capital Triptophan on Thanksgiving Day! There’s no cover, and the Brite Spot will be serving up some actual PIE for you to sample, so lace up your dancing shoes, it’s time to shimmy!

$4 Cosmopolitan Drink Special: You only go around once in this life, so you have to grab for all the gusto you can get. JUST GRAB IT!!! 

This evening’s crafts will be brought to you via Bianchi Bicycle, meaning I can’t pick up any extra pumpkins for tonight’s carving extravaganza, you’ve got to supply them yourself! Bring in your own pumpkin and a candle, and I’ll have tarps and all manner of crazy carving implements for you to set up shop and whittle your squash into proper Halloween fashion.

If you walk in without a pumpkin, never fear! I have some sassy seasonal spooky sand crafts, as well as some other Halloween projects that will be just as enjoyable. Come in and enjoy the evening, we’ll be delighted to see you and your funkin!

February 22nd, 2012 • Dog Biscuits Bake-Off!

$4 Cosmopolitans! Here’s to good times, tonight is kinda special… 

Bet you didn’t know it, but today’s a national holiday, and no, I’m not talking about giving up french fries for 40 days.

It just so happens to be “International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day” and we shall observe this holiday with gusto. It’s a well known fact that no one appreciates a dog biscuit quite as much as a dog, but if you don’t have a dog, or any dog friends, it’s okay. The biscuits we’re making are a simple vegetarian recipe, so if you prefer that we call them “people biscuits” for human consumption, no one’s going to freak out, especially me. I’m mostly just excited that we’re baking at CraftNight tonight!

I’ll bring the toaster oven and the biscuit mix, and little bags that we can color and decorate so that we can make and bake the biscuits, then wrap them up all cute-like for dogs and dog lovers of Los Angeles! Make dog biscuits in the shape of bones, hats, letters, stars, hearts, it’s a sculpting fest, woooooo!
