Popsicle Stick Bird Bath • August 29th, 2018

Wednesday, August 8th, 2018 at Akbar ’round 9ish to midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
SPECIAL EVENT>>> SELF DEFENSE CLASS w/Cory Klink starts at 8pm!
Craft Project: Popsicle Stick Bird Feeder

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special: Your Complete Castle of Cocktails!
*********$3 suggested donation, please!

I’m BAAAAAACCCKKKK!

After three weeks of galavanting all over Europe, I am pleased to report that I’m relaxed, tan, and EXCITED TO SEE YOU!!!

Now remember, we’ve got QUEER SELF DEFENSE CLASS with Cory Klink at 8pm! Here’s more info, please come support this amazing martial arts teacher and learn some valuable techniques keeping yourself prepared and safe in our big crazy world of even crazier humans.

What craft do I have for you this week? I was thinking about the BIRDS and how they get hungry. We’ll be making bird feeders out of popsicle sticks! It’s easy as pie, I have a diagram for you and all the required popsicle sticks to make this work. It kind of looks like a lil’ raft, but then you build upward with your sticks so that it makes a cool box-type structure, and you’ll tie some yarn to it so it can hang from a tree or the rafters, or wherever birds like to hang out.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

RETURN of the Unicorn Pins • April 4th, 2018

This Wednesday, April 4th, 2018 at Akbar it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project:  Unicorn Pins Yayyyyyy!!!! (Paint yer own!)

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special, get yours today!
*********$3 suggested donation, we’re a scrappy non-profit alive because of you! xoxo

When we last saw our wooden lasercut unicorn profiles, they were in a box… somewhere. And then I went out of town, and my poor CraftNight Lieutenants couldn’t find them anywhere, and so the unicorns did not star as the craft for that evening. It was a bit of a SNAFU: Situation Normal: Awol Forgotten Unicorns. You know, like they say in the military.

However, I FOUND THEM! I found the UNICORNS! And they’re FUN, and you can wear one after you paint it and glue gems to it and it will just be the everlovin’ BEST. I mean, this creature has been captivating us since 5th century BCE. Marco Polo thought rhinoceroses were the ugliest unicorns he’d ever seen and was super disappointed. Here’s a direct quote from when he was rooting around in Sumatra (formerly Basma):

“The head resembles that of a wild boar, and they carry it ever bent towards the ground. They delight much to abide in mire and mud. ‘Tis a passing ugly beast to look upon, and is not in the least like that which our stories tell of as being caught in the lap of a virgin; in fact, ’tis altogether different from what we fancied.”

Still, people were drawn to the power and mystique of the majestic unicorn. As late as 1741 you could purchase powdered unicorn horn in jars in London pharmacies. Obviously, we don’t have anything as resplendent as that, but well… they are wooden shapes for painting, and the resplendence is up to you.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

First Craft of the Year!!! • January 10th, 2018

JANUARY 10th, 2018 DOORS OPEN EARLY 7pm!!!!
****8pm Special Workshop by Linda Santiman and Lauren Costine

*****9pm Sign-making and cocktail-drinking continues!!!
******$3 donation for supplies, purty pleeze!
>>>>RSVP HERE! (Help us figure out how many supplies to bring!)<<<<<<

New Year and bet your bippy that we’re comin’ in HOT!!! It’s a Protest Poster Painting Party for the upcoming Los Angeles Womens March! Come on in without a THING and we’ll give you all the supplies to make yourself seen and heard when you go downtown to holler!

Our sign painting salons get kinda crowded, so we’re opening at 7pm (take advantage of Akbar’s lovely happy hour prices) for earlybird access to make your sign. We know last year was a total shit show, and we know it’s just gonna keep coming at us, this is why Linda and Lauren will be teaching a one-hour workshop at 8pm called “Resistance – How to be an Activist Without Losing Your Mind.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m really into THE TRUTH. And truth is at a premium. Whatever your feelings about the GOP and the President, information is being distorted, and it’s hard to keep a level head. The role of a free press in our democracy is vital, it’s our watchdog on behalf of the public’s interest, let us not be asleep at the wheel about this. There is a lot of messed up stuff about this weird country, but our First Amendment Right is one of the best things we ever did for ourselves.

WHY do we protest? Does it make a difference? YES IT DOES. Progress is slow, politics is frustrating, tedious, and a major pain in the ass, it takes forever. We are pushing the papers, we’re making the calls, and we’re doing the work. But we’re also THE PEOPLE, and we are the ones who will also be voting, and our discontent must be VISIBLE. Those who are elected serve us, our elected officials need a goddamn reminder that we are awake and watching.

We also need to get out there for ourselves, for each other, in solidarity. We do have power, and a great way to remember that is by seeing just how many of us are willing to spend our hard-earned leisure time continuing to protest the dumbness that is the current GOP.

So this week I’m offering you the most FUN way to work on your discontent. Get your butt in here and make a sign, we need you.

There will be treats, there will be paint, there will be cocktails, handouts, education, camaraderie, cohesion, and resolve!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

TONIGHT! Holiday Figurine Painting! • Dec 6th, 2017

TONIGHT! Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 at Akbar 9pm – midnight (or later)
****Project: Paint a holiday figurine thingy!

*****$3 Donation Please
******$4 Drink specials! Akbar: Everything you want in a bar and MORE!

Use the brush of your feelings to paint the questions into your heart! OR, if that’s too much this holiday season, just come to CraftNight and paint a holiday figurine, I’ll have supplies at the ready for you! The color of truth can emerge in emotions, but the color of truth can also just frickin’ be on HOLD while Los Angeles is burning, yeesh!

I think tonight is a FINE time to have a cocktail or three! As the end of the year is still rife with surprises, it’s just not always comforting knowing that anything can happen. This is where we go into high distraction mode. Take a load off, get into a lil’ painting project while making friends, listening to music in our cozy watering hole here in Silverlake.

Tonight’s craft is a smallish unpainted figurine, seasonal in nature, quite charming, you can paint it all one color, or paint it ALL the colors!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

DECEMBER IS HERE!

It’s all part of our little two bars, one night, extravaganza! Ye Olde CrafteNighte Crafte Faire FB Info

Clothespin Noteholder Magnet Craft! • August 16th, 2017

This Wednesday, August 16th, 2017 from 9pm until midnight (or later) it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Clothespin Noteholder Magnets!
$3 Donation Please
$4 Drink specials! Akbar: The Bar of Your Heart!

Notes notes notes, little pieces of paper all over the place and nothing to control it!
Whatever will you do?
However shall you survive?
Never fear, CraftNight is here, with a remedy for wayward papers! Come on in, paint up your clothespin, apply a magnet, and voila: notes organized!

NOW THEN: A lot of hate has been bubbling to the surface of our nation, in a way that is terribly discouraging. Please come in and use your Akbar, your CraftNight. We are a location specializing in tolerance and acceptance. Akbar is a space of love, and very reasonably priced cocktails.

We’re a fabulously queer community hub, and we’ll not let the vile dumbness of hatred and bigots seep into our sequins, no we will not. We are not strangers to this battle, and we’re doubling down to stick up for ourselves and each other. Because the shit storm isn’t on the way, it’s not coming, it’s here.

The Southern Poverty Law Center lays out some of the solemn details of how the radical right was more successful in entering the political mainstream last year than half a century. Also, check out Dr. Walter D. Greason’s compiled materials from a class he taught on collective racial violence that can help us understand the danger that Charlottesville represents.

We have creativity, we have impact. Our numbers are huge, and our voices are LOUD. CraftNight has been rocking our first amendment rights with Protest Poster Painting Parties and other forms of Craftivism. Stay tuned for us to supply you with continued ways to unite for social justice and the planet at large.

But mainly we offer respite: an air-conditioned intermission from the 24-hour news tickers tickering tenacious tensions. Come in and have a cocktail, some art therapy, some goodness.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain
