promo_tigrrr

This Wednesday (TONITE!) from 9pm to midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Acorn Leaf Freeform Craft!
$2 Processing fee, please
$4 Cosmo Drink Special! The Akbar Cosmo: So Delicate. So Beautiful.
SPECIAL EVENT THIS SATURDAY 6 – 10pm: The SparkleBlob Spooky-Tacular Harvest Gala!!! (Bob Baker Marionette Theater)
See David LeBarron, Ian MacKinnon, LaMuff, Pat & Charlie, a string of very special performances and Gothtober Reels, MC’d by none other than Jean Natalia of Wig Out! Dress in your Autumn Best to Win King or Queen of the Event! SparkleBlob is the new nonprofit that houses CraftNight, Gothtober and the Holiday Puppet Show and other fine programs under one roof, run by me, your Craft Captain, aka “Executive Sparkle Director.” Hope to see you there!

Now then. Acorns.
I ordered a box of 35, which seemed like a lot of acorns at the time. But acorns are small, and I knew that… but when they got here, they looked even smaller. Which means that 35 acorns is actually not that many acorns.

That’s why I’m also pairing it with leaves, to make it so that you can build a very adorable fall ornament-like garland, or something to put on a fall birthday present, or wear around your neck as a totem to daylight savings… I dunno. Acorns are very small, leaves are useful in making them stand out and be celebrated.
You can paint the tops of them so that they look like little smurf mushrooms. There are a lot of people out there making fabulous things out of acorns right now. We will explore some of these exciting options! I will also bring some spools, you can make acorn people with spool bodies. Acorns are small and cute. This is the last fall craft before we get TOTALLY IMMERSED IN HALLOWEEN MADNESS.

And yes, we will be sampling another strange seasonal product, if you want to find out what it is, please come in and have a sip.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

(See below, on the left, to find out tonight’s craft!)
CraftNight is now in its 11th year, and having developed quite a few more programs such as Gothtober.com and the Annual Holiday Show, I’ve decided to go non-profit to make these efforts more sustainable and long-lasting. SparkleBlob is having a FUNDRAISER this September 28th (6pm – 10pm)  in the form of The SparkleBlob Spooky-tacular Harvest Gala, and YOU are invited!
It’s our way of saying “Happy Fall” to you, and all proceeds are going to help SparkleBlob become an official nonprofit and stage our annual amazing holiday puppet show!

The family friendly evening will be hosted by the HIstoric Bob Baker Marionette Theater and you’ll experience:

  • The Good Time Cupcake Paper Owl Craft
  • Our Gothtober Reel Showcase of Fall Favorites
  • Performances by Ian MacKinnon, LaMuff, Pat & Charlie, David LeBarron and more!
  • The Autumn Royalty Costume Competition (dress in your Autumnal best and WIN!)

Spool Creatures • September 11th, 2013

spool_folk

This Wednesday, September 11th, 2013 from 9pm – midnight or later, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Spool Creatures!
$2 Processing fee
$4 Cosmopolitans! The Akbar Cosmo: Something Special in the Bar

When’s the last time you took a good long look at a spool? Turns out it’s been quite awhile for me, what an AMAZING craft opportunity! You can make spool people, spool animals, spool monsters, you can paint’em or glue stuff to ’em or just wrap string around ’em and drag ’em around on the floor to amuse your cat, or even just to amuse yourself. Just don’t eat ’em.

Because spools are such a diverse craft with infinite opportunities to personalize your project, I’m bringing all the bits you need, from fancy plastic gems, to pipe cleaners (to form little limbs) and paint, and beads (to make weird-looking hands and feet), and thread. I’ll also have idea sheets to spark your imagination, because I just can’t believe how many fun things there are to make with spools.

On another note: I’ll have a weird seasonal candy for you to try. Without revealing what it is, turns out that “seasonal” vaguely sums it up. When discovering this item in the candy aisle, it became apparent that the only thing to do is offer up crafters as candy guinea pigs to review the product! Our findings will be posted on the Gothtober Blog. As a matter of fact, each week at CraftNight, we will try and review a different autumn “edible” product as a service to the public. Ever since we reviewed Candy Corn Oreos last year, it became apparent that informing the public about “edible” Halloween products can be helpful.

See you at the Craft Table,

Painty-Painty Figurine Time! • September 4th, 2013

cake_party_003

This Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 from 9pm – midnight or later, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Paint a Figurine!
$2 Processing fee
$4 Cosmopolitans! The Akbar Cosmo: Enriching the Lives of People We Touch.

Coming across many tiny plaster figurines of dogs, bugs, unicorns, frog princes and what-not, far be it from your Craft Captain to not capitalize on the situation: I got ’em ALL. If you like coloring, then you’ll probably like painting one of these things, it’s like a 3-D coloring book, except not! It’s painting a tiny statue, which is easy if you paint it all one color, and hard if you paint it over 10 colors! And you can sparkle it up with some glitter glue and add whatever you need to take things further.

September means back to school, back to books, back to teachers and dirty looks, and on the horizon is the Autumnal Equinox. Autumn approaches with each shorter summer evening sunset, pink slashes through the sky, a thousand billowy cumulonimbus organza ball gowns coloring the golden atmosphere. At some point, the earth will tilt just that much, that teeny bit that will make leaves fall and the sky a bit more blue. But until that happens, the tomatoes and the berries are perfect, baseball season is getting very exciting, and with this heat, any body of water is still quite inviting.

Please drop in to CraftNight and see us if you’re so inclined.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Light Switch Plates • August 28th, 2013

come_on_over

This Wednesday, August 28th, 2013 from 9pm – midnight or later, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Light Switch Plates!
$2 Processing fee
$4 Cosmopolitans! The Akbar Cosmo: The most glamorous 5-letter word in a glass!
Also: THIS FRIDAY! Summertime Extracurricular CraftNight @The Skirball August 31st!

The moon is in its last quarter waning away to make room for some serious star gazing, and also it seems, August finally delivered the smackdown heat it’s famous for this week, LA’s set to be nice and toasty through Friday. Make your summer feel just that much more summer-like by cooling off with a $4 cosmo and some $2 crafts whydontcha!

It’s amazing that the insanely awesome and powerful force of electricity is controlled by a seamless organization of wires, all bundled together in a tiny little flip switch for you to add ambience to your kitchen, or wherever else you happen to need light. It deserves a little appreciation, a little glory for all its hard work, wouldn’t you reckon?

We’re going to say farewell to August by customizing light switch plates, one of my favorite crafts, one that never gets old. You can cover one of these things with googly eyes, or gems, or letter beads, and whether you keep it for yourself or give it to someone else, it never ceases to delight whoever gets to keep it. Magazines for collage will also be provided, lots of opportunities to theme your plate in a myriad of styles.

I’m never exactly sure how we arrive at the end of the month so quickly, but this week is your last chance to get your very own complimentary Mama Cass button, as September will bring a whole new premium badge for your satisfaction and enjoyment.

See you at the Craft Table!
