*** LAST WEEKEND OF SHOWS: Our SparkleBlob Holiday show is HERE! “The SnowGlobe of Progress: An Urban Puppet’s Contemplation” made TimeOut and KCRW’s lists!!! We’ve got home made hot buttered rums, baked goods, snow globes and oh yeah, a SHOW!!!  

Come on over and paint a little snowperson, or a Santa, or a reindeer! Every week, CraftNight strives to deepen community ties and create a lil’ arty enclave for you to express yourself through making fun and easy projects. Cozy on over and sip a cocktail, let us discuss glitter and googly eyes, puffballs and pipe cleaners.

You may have no idea how you strengthen CraftNight by dropping in, but believe me, you are part of the web of relationships that connects us! Our bar on the corner has been here almost two decades, on New Year’s Eve, it’s our 20th Anniversary! As we bring 2016 to an end and begin preparations for the next trip around the globe together, it’s all about connection. Besides having opposable thumbs, being there for one another in our especially annoyingly human way is one of the top reasons why being human is cool.

We have a biggie-stinky-hurkin’ wheelbarrow of manure to shovel in 2017, and it’s not a one person job. There’s no time for lone wolves. Time to ask for help, time to be strong enough to ask for help, and we have to take care of each other, be visible and active, practice reciprocity and learn lessons from each other.

Interdependence is the new Independence. And cookies. Really a lot of cookies.

Hooray, 2016 is almost over, but not without some seriously festive crafts for you to make and take your mind off of the crazy. Last year, there was a shiny, fancy sale, and I scooped up as much holiday stuff as I could, and saved it in the vault until NOW. That means this month is going to be PACKED with fun projects to do that are, yes, holiday oriented. Tonight I’ve got Xmas and Hanukkah choices, as well as some secular stuff if you’re just not into the holiday jamz. It’s all sparkly though, and it’s all very glamorous.

While everyone’s scurrying around trying to shop for this, that and the other, take a moment for yourself, and create a keepsake for you or a loved one that will remind them of you. Nourish your body, your heart, your soul, your desire for a cozy cocktail in the company of gorgeous strangers who are fine with conversation or comfortable silence. The demands on one’s time and energy get quite crunchy this time of year. Make taking a break be a part of your holiday traditions, concentrating on what’s important to you.

Sharing the goodness of life need not involve discount coupons, oppressive party schedules, or recipes you don’t like to make. No one lives outside the walls of existence, it is a hallowed spot in yourself and your mind that belongs to YOU. If you don’t want to go to Uncle Crotchety’s Republican Cookie Bake-Off this year, you don’t have to, just send a nice card, and skip it. If they try to guilt you into going: send a gift basket in lieu of yourself, no one can argue with a good basket. Or… you know, send them an ornament that looks like private parts. That always goes over especially well.

Now then, you like puppets, hot buttered rum, lights, music, song, and Los Angeles, please come see my puppet show. I know I know, how many people beg you to see their puppet show? You lead a rich, full life!

Is it killing you, or making you stronger?

I tellya, I’m a lone wolf when it comes to disappointment, I hole up, read things, sleep on the floor under a blanket fort, live off of strange frozen items… I take time to metabolize what’s given me.

When I thought about doing CraftNight tonight, my inner hermit cringed, because I’m a little bit like a broken porcupine right now, possibly a bit stabby, I’m overwhelmed to the point of a grouchy, taciturn countenance.

But then I remember that I actually like people, and I really like you, and I hope I see you so that we can give each other hugs.

CraftNight was there when Gore lost, it was there for Obama’s win. CraftNight has been through death, destruction, and tragedy. And this is why CraftNight will be here for you this evening. Because art.

The creative act is the opposite of the destructive act. CraftNight is art activism. Over the span of 14 years CraftNight has encouraged thousands of people to connect with themselves and each other by making stuff with their hands.

I purchased extra glitter glue today, I got extra sparkles and letter beads, and I got these super strange blank wooden “person” thingies. You can make yours into a cat or a unicorn or whatever. Come in and live with presence, give yourself a moment.

Akbar’s CraftNight rumpus room will be a mellow place for you to relax and space out, not have to make too much conversation, and melt into a painty project while you have a delicious cocktail.

We have a planet to save, and a terrifyingly insane to-do list to get started on… but not tonight.

Tonight, we’re just gonna do things nice and easy.

Next week’s CraftNight will be the day after election day. That’s why this CraftNight bulletin is historic. CraftNight has been around for three presidential elections, this will be our 4th. I don’t know if we’re going to be horrified, relieved, or what.

My brain is sort of stewing in it’s stress mixture about it, so I’m doing what I do best: Getting the supplies together, and waiting for you to walk on in, I think we’re going to do some coloring. Coloring’s good for anxiety.

That’s right: Cocktails and knives together again for PUMPKIN CARVING NIGHT!

You’re gonna have to bring your own pumpkin! Carve it up, leave the mess with us, rejoice at your orange masterpiece!

I’m bringing a few pumpkins, and you can purchase one, but I might run out, so be prepared! I have all the tarps, blades, candles and bits for you to carve a pumpkin, so get over here and carve a face in a squash! This is a fine, traditional get-together with A-list Angelenos who know how to have Halloween fun. As we near All Hallow’s Eve, your glowing hollowed pumpkin bedecked with interior candle will let passersby know you are feelin’ the season.
