TONIGHT! St. Paddy Crafty! • March 13th, 2019

CRAFTNIGHT! @AKBAR! 9pm • March. 13, 2019 • St. Paddy Sand Art! Suggested donation is $3, but we won’t turn anyone away for lack of funds or too many funds, lol. Your donation goes toward supplies for CraftNight and SparkleBlob programs.

We haven’t done sand art in a dog’s age, so it’s high time we did some, in the shape of leprechaun heads, rainbows, and shamrocks! There will also be some supplemental St. Patty crafty surprises while supplies last for earlybirds and newcomers!

There’s a LOT of Irish walking around the City of Angels, most unlikely turning out to be ME, lol. Thanks to some fun and lively results from 23andMe, I found out that I’m around 15.7% British and Irish, with likely connections to places like Tyne and Wear, Greater London, County Cork, and County Limerick, to name a few. Thus, I’m in the mood to celebrate!

We want you to have your crafts in time for St. Patrick’s Day, which is not nearly the jamboree-drinking and partying fest that exists on the east coast. But we’re gonna do our BEST. Give the crafts you make tonight to someone who could use a bit of luck in their day. Wear green, pinch butts, find rainbows, seems like a pretty good to-do list.

If you want to celebrate in an especially raucous and fun way, join us for upcoming festivities with Bet Yer Bottom BINGO SHAMROCK EDITION this St. Patrick Sunday! Prizes galore, terrible jokes, boozy giveaways, and probably a limerick or two, after all, it’s my heritage and I want to share it with you.

See you TONIGHT at the Craft Table, JP Craft Captain

TONIGHT! Shrinky Dinks • Feb 27th, 2019

CRAFTNIGHT! @AKBAR! • Wed. Feb 27th, 2019 • Shrinky Dinks! Craftnight is donation-based, your donation keeps CraftNight alive, thank you! xoxo ~MGMT

People often ask me what my favorite craft is. The answer is: Shrinky Dinks. If you do not know what a shrinky dink is… there is a possibility that you will make one at CraftNight tonight, and the naked truth of tenderness will cleanse you. Does that freak you out? Well breathe fully, and lemme just say, that Shrinky Dinks are TRANSFORMATIVE. They have the power to perhaps revitalize the place in you that is raw.

A Shrinky Dink looks like a lil’ dippy piece of plastic that you draw on, and who cares, blah blah, you use the pencils, half-mindedly scrawling whatever and then… our certified Shrinky Dink Technician puts it in the toaster oven (or uses the shrink ray) and ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. It shrinks! You panic! It wads up and you just aren’t sure you can take it, and then it unfolds and flattens out and WOW YOU MADE THAT! And you wonder what you were doing and thinking before this moment, before you had this test of faith and triumph.

That’s how shrinky dinks make people feel.

It’s polystyrene! When you bake a sheet or segment of it, the result is a durable 1/3 size creation that is 9 times thicker than the original measurement. They were invented in 1973 by Betty Morris and Kate Bloomberg, two housewives from Brookfield, Wisconsin.

In 2008, UC Irvine Professor Michelle Khine applied shrinky dinks to create mini structures for the application of microfluidics to topics such as stem cell research. And in 2014, a team from Harvard University and MIT used Shrinky Dinks to create self-assembling robots.

Shrinky Dinks have given us so much, and continue to be used in new and inventive ways, that’s why its my favorite craft, come make one… or two… or three…

See you at the Craft Table, JP Craft Captain

TONIGHT! Paint-a-Penguin • Feb 20th, 2019

CRAFTNIGHT! @AKBAR! • Wed. Feb 20th, 2019 • Paint-a-Penguin!

I am not like Elsa from “Frozen.” The cold DOES kinda bother me anyway.

Let us try and embrace this freezy weather by painting wonderful little ceramic sculptures of PENGUINS!

The start of written penguin history by witless humans came from one Antonio Pigafetta, who was aboard Ferdinand Magellan’s first circumnavigation of the globe in 1520. He spotted penguins near what was probably Punta Tombo in Argentina. He called them “strange geese.” Thus also became the start of the underestimation of penguins by basically everyone. Do not be fooled, penguins are tenacious.

Penguins use teamwork and social connection to survive! These “strange geese” are the embodiment of fortitude, able to survive some SERIOUS WINTER SHIT. You have to have patience, strength and determination to get through subzero temperatures. Penguins don’t do figurative storms, they weather REAL storms and they know, somewhere in their minds, that there WILL be an end to inclement weather. They hunker down, they huddle together, they persevere. They’re a nice role model if you’re having challenges in your life, they are robust birds, they’ll show you the way.

Tonight, I’ll hand you your ceramic penguin, and plenty of paint colors to make it exactly the color you need to make it be your penguin and no one else’s. When times are hard, or things get heavy, your penguin will remind you that yes, things can be quite crappy, but the earth turns, and the sun WILL come out.

Come in have a cocktail, paint a flightless waterfowl, enjoy music, warmth, and the company of lovely people.

See you at the Craft Table, JP Craft Captain

CraftNight LOVE-IN • Feb 13th, 2019

It’s here it’s here, it’s finally HERE!

CRAFTNIGHT! AKBAR! • Wed. Feb 13th, 2019 • The LOVE-IN

We’re havin’ a LOVE-IN, where LOVE is the thing, here’s how it works:

Every crafter gets a bag. You write your name on your bag and put it up on the wall in the dance floor. You GET VALENTINES from your fellow crafters, and you make valentines for them! You also get TREATS from the Craft Captain (ya, that’s me). Also if you wanna, make valentines for people in your life that could use some love.

I’m a romance activist. I don’t think love’s just for suckers, or kissy people, or foppish lotharios wearing fancy scarves. I think love’s for everyone, since it’s such a strange, rare and fantastic option for showing care and consideration. Love is for everyone, from those who take things hard, to those who don’t notice anything at all. Love’s for blowhards and wallflowers, love’s for the downtrodden and the highbrows, love’s for the ones to don’t want any to those who have it all.

Love is even for you from yourself. That’s why you should come on over and treat yourself to my expertly collected and curated valentine craft scraps to make ANY KIND OF VALENTINE YOU WANT. I mean it. We can explore the full gamut of emotions with all the good time gee gaws I’ll share with you, it’ll be a paper scrapper’s paradise.

This twirling planet, it’s teeming with the unlikeliness of us, why not reach out to each other with sweet colors, sayings, and hearts?

See you at the Craft Table, JP Craft Captain
