CRAFTNIGHT CAMPFIRE RESORT IS READY FOR AUGUST!

In the footsteps of Dali, Magritte, Miro, Man Ray, and more, we shall dive into the unconscious with some avant-garde crafts! These surrealist crafts/games require no strategy, no logical deductions and no specific skills!
This evening centers around freeing your mind from the constraints of discursive order. Camp Counselor, Andrew, will be leading this expedition into the provocation of bourgeois normalities.

For the Exquisite Corpse project, you’ll be shown how to produce drawings that lead you far far away from conscious intention.
For the Surrealist Collage project, you’ll use magazines to produce fantastic amalgamations of the delirious and grotesque!

SCREENING:
If that’s just too much for you this week, in cheeky and notable opposition to the spirit of surrealist games, we’re screening Troop Beverly Hills starring Shelly Long as a spoiled, 80s-era aristocrat who transforms herself into a warm and useful person! Look for Pia Zadora, Annette Funicello, Kareem Abdul Jabar and Cheech Marin! Look for Rodeo Drive, Spago’s and other LA Landmarks! Wax nostalgic for the display of overt, devout materialism that was the late 80s!
The CraftNight Store will have movie munchies for you to snack on as you watch this cherished camp classic next to our indoor resort campfire.

CRAFTNIGHT CAMPFIRE RESORT MARCHES ON!

As ever, CraftNight continues to be a source of inspiration for high society ideals, especially since we turned into a resort for the summer season. Tonight we embrace coasters! The very first coasters, or beermats, or whatever you wanna call ’em, were made in the 1880s, and the function of coasters has not changed. Basically, they protect surfaces, like your table, from moisture. Tonight’s coasters are made from cork, which means they are pretty high-end, and are sure to impress guests when you put these on display.

Take your handy-dandy coaster, and adorn it with felt, OR use magazine scraps (we will have plenty) to Mod Podge them and make them be awesome. Mod Podge is sort of like glue, and sort of like not, it’s sticky, but when it dries, it forms a protective cover over the scraps you’ve decided to immortalize.

We have Jan Whetstone to thank for Mod Podge, a substance that we officially decided is one of the most feminist craft supplies you can use. Jan mixed up the recipe for Mod Podge in her garage in the 60s, she was an advocate for women’s rights in the business world, and developed the most widely used, versatile substance for decoupage in history. She passed away in 2013 leaving behind a legacy of wonderful craft recipes and products, and we will salute her tonight by making coasters!

Lastly, we will have very special guest and camp counselor, Alex Kenefick, presenting some camp exercises, if you complete them, you’ll get the best badge yet! Wooden Disguises • March 11th, 2015

Project: Wooden Disguises for Your Exotic, Mysterious Life!

You see someone walking down the street that you do NOT want to see. There are no trashcans or cars or walls for you to duck behind, they are walking toward you, leaning forward, searching for recognition. Quick! Rustle around in your rucksack and pull out your trusty disguise, it’s made of wood, and it looks like a robot, kitty, puppy or butterfly! Expertly you hide your face behind the themed facade, and the opposite party shrugs and walks on by thinking “Huh, to think it could’ve been…”

You will fool anybody and everybody with this wooden disguise mask. Reconnaissance has never been this easy! Fool someone into thinking you aren’t in the room, go incognito to avoid press detection, go undercover in your city to fight for justice!

In other news, it’s NATIONAL CRAFT MONTH so we’re kicking up our heels and feeling rather snazzy, having been at the Craft Table for going on 13 years now, how about that? There will be small but mighty surprises for March’s CraftNight crafters, mark my words.

Other March highlights are: Irish-American Heritage Month, Quinoa Month, National Frozen Food Month and “Mad for Plaid” Month.

PROJECT: Pumpkin Carve Karaoke!
$2 Processing fee, please, and BYO Pumpkin, I’ll have stuff for you to carve with, as well as some other treats!
$4 Drink special “The Lyla” a seasonal Silverlake delicacy involving ginger beer, whiskey and sass.

Sing, Drink, and be SCARY!
It’s the CraftNight Pumpkin Carving Karaoke Mini-Festival, our last October Crafting Extravaganza.
Yes, as a matter of fact we WILL be combining sharp knives and alcoholic beverages, as is our yearly Akbar/CraftNight tradition! Bring your squash, bring yourself, bring your friends and may the good times commence!

Special Guests, Kat Laukat and Ang Evans will be hosting karaoke, they’ll have a special songbook with some spooky songs!

The floors will be covered in plastic, and we’ll have carving tools, ziplock bags (to save seeds), trash bags, candy and a tune-filled night of singin’ the hits! There will be treats and candy and FUN, so don’t miss it!
