CRAFTNIGHT CAMPFIRE RESORT PERSEVERES!  

It is the end of July, we are nearing the August month which means we are officially in the heart of midsummer. Visitors to Los Angeles will often say it’s hot in July, but they have no idea the true parching power that is August. In August you can’t buy bread at the market, by the time you get home, it’s toast!

We will have refreshing cocktails for you at the bar, and a refreshing craft coming to you from none other than our visiting CraftNight Campfire Resort Counselor and Yumster Friends Creator and Business Owner, Angie Cho! We will have the necessary supplies for you to do this craft, just bring yourself! Angie will show you how to use two different scraps of pretty paper to cut two halves of a heart, glue them together on card stock and voila! You will have a really nice set of heart cards.
Also: Our new camp store is OPEN! Get cotton candy flavored Pop Rocks and jawbreakers at inflated campstore prices! Look for new sundries every week!

And remember: We’ll have a special badge for this night, and you can collect them all by visiting our resort and doing the required activities to earn them! Collect them ALL!

CRAFTNIGHT CAMPFIRE RESORT CONTINUES!  
Yes, your favorite hideaway haven at your favorite dark and dreamy neighborhood bar has gone and turned itself into a resort. What does that mean? It means that we’ll be faithfully carrying on with the weekly craft, but we’re also going to throw in some extra summery and leisurely and camp-like elements into our usual programming.

This week’s craft is a classic, where you take a beer bottle, wrap it with yarn, decorate it with all manner of geegaws, put a candle in it and voila, instant resort ambiance!

We also have badges for summertime, collect them all! You see, it’s like campfire girls, or webelos, or girl scouts, or the Navy, or the Vatican or other organizations that are supposed to shape you into a model citizen using cult-like materials symbolizing achievement, rank or status. We’re not trying to turn anyone into a model citizen, if anything, kind of the opposite. But who doesn’t enjoy a good premium? This week’s badge will be just as coveted as the last, so be sure to get one!

We’re going to watch”Wet Hot American Summer” while you wrap beer bottles with yarn.
We will press “play” on the DVD close to 10pm, and we’ll play it as many times as we want until the bar closes, probably about twice. And we’ll have popcorn. And if you want to play “archery” to get badge #1 from last week, it will be available to you!

I certainly hope you’re planning your outfit, you don’t want to be a colorless blah out there on Santa Monica when party weekend hits.  In the name of legal equality and social acceptance, you’d be so classy to put on something sassy or brassy in honor of those who fought before us, and those who are fighting now. Floating Ship • May 20th, 2015

It’s a simple foam ship, you assemble it, decorate it, and then head out on the high seas!

Against the elements, despite the primal dangers of the seas and the universe’s seemingly or total non-obligation to serve you in any way, you are OUT THERE on the water living, surviving, being fabulous!

This craft is so awesome because it really does float, you can take it to a friend’s pool and watch it bob around on the drink. You can pretend to be fiercely obsessive Captain Ahab or instead pretend to be tattooed and determined Queequeg! Navigate your boat your way, independent, free and to different shores.

Take that ship, take that plane, even if it’s for one day, even if it seems impossible. There is power in the “reset” button. Give yourself a different environment, some silence, some trees, I don’t know, whatever it is that you don’t usually get, do your best to detach from the grind, and have some recreation.

Are you aware that every American owns the deed to 635 million acres of public land? I’m talkin’ about Yosemite! Yellowstone! The Grand Canyon! Carlsbad! The Great Smoky Mountains! And then I heard crafts and cocktails is a pretty good local substitute if you just can’t get away.

DIY Kaleidoscopes • May 13th, 2015

Project: Kaleidoscopes

$4 Drink Specials, perfect for getting rid of the curse of work!

You get to make your own kaleidoscope at CraftNight this week, which is very momentous. In this day and age, a kaleidoscope is like “big deal, who cares, whatever.” But these tiny devices offer so much more in a metaphorical and philosophical way. You should come in and make one because they are powerful talismans:

1.) CATHARSIS – Because do you remember looking into a kaleidoscope for the first time as a kid? How do those colorful shapes get in there? What are they made of? How do they change? Why don’t they fall out of the tube?!? Finally, all of these answers will be yours because we have the supplies and you will now know everything.

2.) EMBRACING THE UNKNOWN – Every time you look into a kaleidoscope, it’s different. The little chips get shaken around, you turn the tube, and all the pieces move around to make a cool design, and it’s different every single time. You have no control over what those little chips are going to show you! It’s crazy! But it’s pretty! Let the chips fall where they may!

3.) IT IS WHAT IT IS – So pieces fall away and come together inside this cheap little tube full of simple plastic bits. The oblivious busy world is going to throw you everything ever, and sometimes things will be joyous and sometimes things will suck… but no matter what, the pieces of your kaleidoscope will still come back together and make a new design. This is both beautiful and terrifying. Reflect.

4.) YOU GOTTA START – Deep thoughts aside, a kaleidoscope and all that if offers doesn’t do crap unless you pick it up and aim it toward a light source. This worthless trinket from childhood is cleverly disguised as a powerful symbol for the potential you have at finding and sustaining beauty in your life despite continuous changes and challenges. And yes, I know, there are days, weeks, months or even years that will make you flip off the kaleidoscope and be mad at it, and ignore it and all that… but it’s always there for you when you are ready to pick the darn thing up and see something new.

I’m still in Tahoe, on honeymoon, I’ll be back next week. At the helm this week, bravely steering the craft ship toward certain greatness, is CraftNight Lieutenant, Andrew! He’ll set you up with everything you need to create the pretty pretty tube of colors. Also can I get points for typing the word “kaleidoscope” a bunch of times?
