Leprechaun Clothespin Craft! • March 16th, 2016

 piglet_cart

Wednesday March 16th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Clothespin Leprechaun Craft!
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder…

Despite the wish of some people who don’t want their Irish heritage to be represented by a mythical wish-granting gnome… that’s exactly what we’re doing this week at CraftNight.

We’ll give you a leprechaun craft kit that comes with adorable clothespin legs, googly eyes, a fashionable green outfit, and yes, his hair is red.

Leprechauns are financially responsible, they work as bankers, distillers and shoe cobblers and they smartly guard their gold with a rainbow mirage. If you chase them to steal their charm cereal, you are a total jerk. We, the neighborhood gay bar shall be celebrating our tiny green brethren to full potential because there’s a long history of fairies being friends with leprechauns.

Besides, everyone knows it’s the fairies who drink themselves to a stupor and party all the time. Akbar could use a few leprechauns; the bar is lousy with fairies, it’s just a merrymaking mishmash of fun and debauchery ALL THE TIME. We also are host to militant mermaids, ubiquitous unicorns, trashed trolls, wild werewolves, growling griffins, hollering harpies, and so much more. There is a lot of variety to be found on the corner of Sunset and Fountain, come see us, we’ll keep a beverage cold for you. All mythological creatures need refreshment.

See you at the Craft Table!

TONIGHT! Emboss a Metal Leaf Kit • March 9th, 2016

hairholes

TONIGHT! Wednesday March 9th, 2016 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: METAL FOIL LEAF EMBOSSING KIT
$3 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Specials at Akbar: The cocktail in front is an Akbar cocktail.

March is National Craft Month, so we’ve been rolling out the deluxe crafts, this week is no exception. I have a metal leaf kit for you and it is SO metal. It’s structural, but not so much that you can’t put your very own individual factors into the final product. You never have to follow craft kit instructions at CraftNight because we want you to have as much as or as little guidance as you require when you sit down with us.

The kit comes with a pattern, a foil insert and tracing stick that looks like a tiny weapon. You can emboss a leaf decoration, OR you can emboss whatever the hell you want, like the face of your best friend, or your pet capybara, or a quippy message only you will understand. It comes with a rustic stick frame and some leaf gem pieces, daresay sturdy materials. This is a pretty top-notch craft I’m talkin’ about here, very swanky!

I know you get busy, and when that happens, stuff like crafting and spending time with friends is the first to go, but I tellya, that’s the stuff that makes the world go round. We have applause and praise to give your creative efforts, and cocktails to ease you into winding down the busy day. We’ve made it easy to be creative, and if you give us one hour per week, at the end of March, that’s FIVE HOURS of creative energy you’ve given yourself. Let us pamper you with googly eyes and glue, won’t you visit us tonight?

See you at the Craft Table!

Fun-n-Flimsy Photo Cubes! • March 26th, 2014

ham_n_peas

This Wednesday, March 26th, 2014 from 9pm until midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Fun-n-flimsy Photo Cubes!
$2 Processing fee, please
$4 Drink Special: “The Lyla” Don’t get mad… get cocktail!

It seems perfectly logical to take a 6-sided object and bedaub it with photos. Who knows what amazing mind came up with this concept, you can leave it on the mantel and see whatever you want whenever you like. Don’t like side one? No problem, just flip Uncle Ernie and his bug collection out of the way so you can see Grandma Blern in her heyday, dancing the cha-cha with her highball and her Pall Mall back in 1965. Rotate it and see yourself covered in spaghetti when you were two!

A photo cube is a gift for a nosey person inspecting your home, they will know everything about you by picking up one of these, learning all sorts of things about you that you’ve chosen to share in pictorial cube form. Don’t disappoint them!

I’ve got a photo cube for you, it’s made out of cardboard, it’s flat, and the reviews about this project are extremely varied. People either love this project, or they can’t stand it, which means we simply MUST try it. Someone’s internet review said that it’s “flimsy” and it is, but if you fold it into a cube and tape it together… maybe it’s less flimsy. Another person said they’d never recommend this project for toddlers, but 4th graders is fine, which means it’s probably perfect for CraftNight.

Your photo cube can be everything or nothing, you get to decide if the photos you put in it will speak for themselves, than again, maybe you’ll customize this cardboard hexahedron with drawings, shapes, glitter glue, beads, sparkles, etc. Can’t wait to see what your photo cube says about you!

See you at the Craft Table,

March 28th, 2012 • Craft Stick Flowers and MORE!

This Wednesday March 28th, 2012 from 9pm until 12-ish at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Craft Stick Flowers and MORE!
$2 Processing fee, please
$4 Cosmo Drink Special – Fill it to the rim with whim!

We were very “painty” last week to foster your inner painter, and this week we’re getting “buildy” so you can nurture your inner architect.

At the beginning of the CraftNight weekly brainstorm, I found someone’s internet plan about how to make super adorable flowers out of popsicle sticks (or “craft sticks” as the lingo goes).
But it seemed very limiting to only make flowers at CraftNight, when popsicle sticks are so versatile! Craft sticks are like tinkertoys in their diversity, you can build a box, a godseye (yes, I’ll bring some yarn!), a planter for a tiny plant, a pencil cup, a recipe holder, a birdhouse, a frame, a valet for your keys and wallet, a sign, an ornamental decoration, the plethora of items you can make is mind-bogglingly vast!

The other thing is, these little sticks, that have been holding up the nation’s popsicles since the early 1900s are made from birch wood. I don’t know if you know about glassine paper… commonly used in the wonderful crinkly translucent envelopes the post office used to package any stamps you may have purchased. Martha Stewart likes to make a big deal out of glassine envelopes and why not, they have an unmatched texture and sheen. Anyway, glassine paper is made not from any ol’ wood but from birch wood. Birch wood finds a way to make life lovely on many different levels, and so we send a hefty salute to it’s usefulness at the month’s end.

See you at the Craft Table!
