TONIGHT! April 11th, 2012 • Banks

TONIGHT! April 11th, 2012 at Akbar from 9-ish until about 12 or later, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Banks!
$2 processing fee, please
$4 Cosmos – The Akbar Cosmo: No one can drink just one…

It would be so much fun to just forget about taxes and not ever have to fill out the forms or keep the receipts or drive to weird far-away offices and sign things and mail things and hope it will be all okay and not anxiety-inducing. BUT. We’re into reality here at CraftNight, so we’ve got some paper BANKS for you to keep a little mad money for when you’re wondering just how much money it takes to fill a city pothole?
A person could perhaps use a little cash in a secret bank made of cardboard of which the government has no knowledge. This secret cardboard bank could be your safeguard in case of complete societal meltdown, we’d love to believe it isn’t so… but we are CraftNight, and we are ready for the future, no matter what the future may hold. Come in and make a bank!
Your hosts this evening will be Craft Lieutenants Veronica LeBron, Coral Lobera and Elaine Walker, experts in manning CraftNight, you’ll be in good hands. My hands are in Brooklyn, typing this, as well as the rest of me.

See you at the Craft Table (eventually),

March 28th, 2012 • Craft Stick Flowers and MORE!

This Wednesday March 28th, 2012 from 9pm until 12-ish at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Craft Stick Flowers and MORE!
$2 Processing fee, please
$4 Cosmo Drink Special – Fill it to the rim with whim!

We were very “painty” last week to foster your inner painter, and this week we’re getting “buildy” so you can nurture your inner architect.

At the beginning of the CraftNight weekly brainstorm, I found someone’s internet plan about how to make super adorable flowers out of popsicle sticks (or “craft sticks” as the lingo goes).
But it seemed very limiting to only make flowers at CraftNight, when popsicle sticks are so versatile! Craft sticks are like tinkertoys in their diversity, you can build a box, a godseye (yes, I’ll bring some yarn!), a planter for a tiny plant, a pencil cup, a recipe holder, a birdhouse, a frame, a valet for your keys and wallet, a sign, an ornamental decoration, the plethora of items you can make is mind-bogglingly vast!

The other thing is, these little sticks, that have been holding up the nation’s popsicles since the early 1900s are made from birch wood. I don’t know if you know about glassine paper… commonly used in the wonderful crinkly translucent envelopes the post office used to package any stamps you may have purchased. Martha Stewart likes to make a big deal out of glassine envelopes and why not, they have an unmatched texture and sheen. Anyway, glassine paper is made not from any ol’ wood but from birch wood. Birch wood finds a way to make life lovely on many different levels, and so we send a hefty salute to it’s usefulness at the month’s end.

See you at the Craft Table!

March 21st, 2012 • Vernal Equinox Flower Pots!

This Wednesday March 21st, 2012 from 9pm until 12-ish at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Springtime Flower Pot Painting Craft!
$2 Processing fee, please
$4 Cosmo Drink Special – Bloom with some Cosmo Flower Power tonight!

The Vernal Equinox has all the flowers saying “Let’s Party!” and so we’re bringing you the chance to paint a lil’ flower pot to your heart’s content. Birth, renewal and regrowth are here for the taking, get rid of the old, bring in the new! If you’ve been draggin’ yer feet and feeling the mulligrubs, let CraftNight gently guide you toward a way to reclaim your life your job your house your bathroom (etc.) in an obnoxiously colorful way!

According to the internet (and the internet knows everything)
Spring has many customs:
1.) Christians are coloring eggs to throw at Jesus for when he finally wakes up!
2.) Buddhists are listening to the band Nirvana and hoping to get a free guitar pick from the river of existence.
3.) Iranians are buying new clothes made out of old lentils
4.) Earth Day decrees that everyone must wear sandals and eat at least one soy product when the moon rises.
5.) Lots of Jewish people are getting ready to cook a brisket and leave one plate out for an invisible guy.
6.) People in China are whipping clay oxen and waving flags.
7.) In Germany, fairies and sprites are crawling out of the woodwork to kill everyone! Quick! Light fires!
8.) There’s an ongoing argument in Sweden over whether it’s a circle dance or a ribbon dance around the May Pole.
9.) Any moment now we should be seeing the feathered serpent that the ancient Mayans will send down the stairway of Chichén Itzå
10.) And yes, there is cultural significance to “Spring Cleaning.” Move your body! Expand the confines of your living space! Clean and organize your Tupperware cabinet! Get into the yard and grow something! Walk outside more frequently! Shake hands with Mother Nature!

Anyway, as you know, you don’t have to bring anything to CraftNight, just yourself, your friends, enough dough for a cocktail or two, and two bucks for the skull at the Craft Table. Come over and play! Flower pots await your paintbrush!

See you at the Craft Table,
JP Craft Captain
