June 27th, 2012 • Rainbow Bracelets!

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 from 9pm(ish) until 12(or later) at Akbar,  it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Rainbow Bracelet
$2 Processing Fee
$4 Cosmopolitans: Taste the Explosion!
Stuff you might want to do this week:
Early Thursday 8pm: Nancy Jean Tucker’s LA Air
Late Thursday 10pm: Jean Spinosa’s WigOUt at Three Clubs
Sunday: 7pm Free/All Ages LaMuff Gold Lamé Video Premier, CD Release Party and Live Show!

We’re ending a month of gay pride celebrations with a shiny beady tribute to the rainbow with RAINBOW BRACELETS! I really like that queerness is symbolized by a multicolored arc. Even in today’s age of special effects, a rainbow still prevails in its ability to inspire joy in the most jaded and cantankerous individual. I dare say, your rainbow bracelet may even carry some or all of the aura of nature’s colorful meteorological phenomenon within it’s simple plastic pony-beaded brilliance. Rainbows are Incredible, and so’s this.

This beaded bracelet craft is quite simple, and much less complicated than the rainbow keychains we made last week, so if your week has been full of too many interconnecting parts and elements: fear not, this week’s project is the opposite. In fact, it’s SO easy, you could probably finish it in 2 minutes, if you need to craft and run.

See you at the Craft Table!

PS – One more thing, on July 16th, CraftNight will make a guest appearance at The Skirball Cultural Center at 9pm, come and PLAY!

June 20th, 2012 • Rainbow Keychain

TONIGHT! Wednesday, June 20th, 2012 from 9pm(ish) until 12(or later) at Akbar,  it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Rainbow Keychain
$2 Processing Fee
$4 Cosmopolitans: I go cuckoo for cosmo puffs!

The thick commercial weave of summer shall be upon us at 7:03pm on Wednesday and there will be thrilling, dare I say frightening things you can do with your estival activities this season. While making your exciting plans, invest in a deep tan and a peach-colored sweater and basque in the finery of ignored priorities! There’s nothing like a Wednesday night to brush off the blandness of sisyphean job tasks and brighten your life with a home made rainbow keychain of your making.

Is there nothing more banal than the uninspiring phrase “Where are my keys?”
A rainbow of colors on stretchy cording could be the answer to this problem.
And yep, all of June is  Gay and Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender pride month, which is why we’re doing rainbow crafts all 4 weeks to commemorate the amazing radness of it all. Someday I might have us make papier maché labrys axe thingers, but for now we’ll stick with rainbows. They’re so pretty.

June 13th, 2012 • Bow Ties

TONIGHT! Wednesday from 9(ish) until midnight or later at Akbar it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Special Note: Tonight’s CraftNight is preceded by a private screening, so we may start a touch late. I’d say if you get here early, have a cocktail and then see if we’re ready for you by 9:30.
Project: Bow Ties!
$2 processing fee, please
$4 Cosmopolitans • Be All that You can Be with an Akbar Cosmo

We’re continuing our gay crafts for June this month by making bow ties.
What’s gay about bow ties?
I just love them because when you wear a bow tie, people can’t figure out whether you’re gay, republican or just weird.
You’ve got to have a certain type of personality to wear a bow tie, you have to BELIEVE or else people are just going to leave the room. You’re actually halfway there if you have 125% confidence when wearing one, but the absolute killer is to wear one that you actually tied and then no one can say a word, they’ll be too busy marveling at your evident aplomb in the ways of life. It’s safe to say that if someone’s walking down the street with a bow tie around their neck, they have things they want to say. They have opinions. Or they really want you to notice them and their obscure ideas/hobbies/beliefs, and they’ll talk to anyone. You might want to cross the street.
Besides, everything is getting super artisan, from schooners carrying their own chocolate across the world to make $12 chocolate bars for the bourgeoisie to people making their own thatched huts out of found toenail clippings. We’re all into harkening back to the old-timey days where you grind your own sausage and stretch and chop peppermint logs into hard candy for kids who are too busy eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos to pay attention to you. The bow tie fits this niche of being evocative of yesteryear yet current with the now and here.
So come in and make your “fashion signifier.” Make it loud, make it proud, make it the best dang bow tie anyone will ever see. There’s no “kind of” wearing a bow tie. You’re either wearing it or you aren’t. If you do wear one, you’ll be in good company:
1.) The Chippendale Dancers
2.) Dr. Who
3.) Grocers in sepia-toned memories of characters in more current movies
4.) Winston Churchill (polda dot, no less, and often)
5.) Blaine Anderson (character from Glee)
6.) Karl Marx
7.) Pee-Wee Herman
8.) Orville Redenbacher
9.) The Cat in the Hat
10.) Fred Astaire

TONIGHT! June 6th, 2012 • GAY PROUD CRAFTS!

TONIGHT! Wednesday from 9(ish) until midnight or later at Akbar it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Gay PROUD Crafts!
$2 processing fee, please
$4 Cosmopolitans • The Akbar Cosmo: The Uncola
• SPECIAL DANCING PLAYLIST FROM DJ KONTROLTOPP PANNYHOSE!!!
• RAINBOW MARGARITA CUPCAKES FROM CRAFT LIEUTENANT LEBRONICA!!!
• TATER TOTTSSSSS!

It’s Time to Celebrate the Queerness of the Nation!
The positive force of dancing beats, rainbow treats and weird foods is coming at you TONIGHT in positive celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people! With tater tots and tequila we shall promote our self-affirmation and increase our visibility as a social group. I’m not saying you have to be gay to come in here and have a rainbow cupcake, and I’m not saying that our rainbow cupcakes will turn you gay either (might make your glycemic index rise a bit but that’s all).
What I AM saying is that:
1.) We’re still fighting for the right to marry, among other things.
2.) People are still “weirded out” by queerness and they don’t know why
3.) Not enough people know about THIS
4.) Or THIS
5.) Or even THIS
6.) Which makes you want to play THIS over and over again for no apparent reason.

Anyway, it’s always deluxe, but tonight it’s SUPER GAY DELUXE so you might as well get your butt in here to see what we have for you. It’s good, it’s just so good!

May 30th, 2012 • Panda Bead Panda Bead Panda Bead Craft!

This Wednesday from 9(ish) until midnight or later at Akbar it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Panda Bead Craft (very beady)
$2 processing fee, please
$4 Cosmopolitans • The Akbar Cosmo: The Uncola

People think that leisure just happens…

and sometimes it does, but more often than not, good liesure takes some planning. If you’re going to do it right, you’ve got to take time. Forgetting about responsibilities, kicking back and not just being in the moment but customizing your moment to omit the constant swirl of chitter chatter in your brain is an art. This might be one of the main reasons that summer exists.
Beads are really good for such a thing. With beads, there’s not as much emotional freak out. Beads force you to concentrate just a bit more on the process at hand, because if you’re not paying attention, you might end up with something waaaay weirder than a necklace. You could accidentally veer into key fob territory, or a headband that’s highly uncomfortable, which is, like, totally okay! Truth be told, if anyone’s championing impractical get-ups, it’s CraftNight.
We’re going to end May with a Panda Bead Craft, you get a little clippy thinger with it, it’s adorable, a cute little kit.But wait, there’s MORE! I’ll be bringing a host of OTHER beads, so that you can embellish, adorn, incorporate or completely replace the panda with your very own bead idea. There’s only one letter separating a bead idea with a bad idea. Bad Ideas RULE.
Oh yeah, I’ve been embracing the Long Form lately, check it out. Reading long and interesting articles on all kinds of fascinating stuff makes it feel like the warmest season of the year, just need a hammock and some spare hours… where did I put those pesky hours anyway? Gotta be around here somewhere… Sheesh…
