Party through the night at this end-of-summer celebration at the Skirball, featuring performances by indie bands Jenny O., In the Valley Below, and Body Parts.

But yes, tonight we’re in our usual cozy home of Akbar, wondering if LA is ever actually going to get HOT WEATHER, or if it’s just a cool year! I don’t know about you, but September isn’t here yet, and somewhere in August and September we usually have at least a few days on BROIL before the Autumnal Equinox.

We’ve made paper bag puppets, finger puppets, stick puppets, even spool puppets that work like marionettes. TONIGHT it’s all about making some foldy paper puppets! Make one and have a friend, have two, have three! Make the Andrews Sisters! We’ll have the markers, the sparkly things, the poofy things, the yarn, everything you need to give your puppet it’s very own personality.

Usually, Shrinky Dinks is our freeform sort of craft where you can draw or trace your favorite designs, cut’ em out, throw ’em in the oven and watch them shrink into durable hard plastic keepsakes. And of course, if that’s how you roll, you can still Freeform it UP, but I’m also offering templates and lanyard materials so that you can make a very savvy Shrinky Dink COASTER!!!

Seriously, after you make one of these, you’ll want a whole set. People will hang out at your swanky pad, ask where you got the coasters and you’ll flip back your scarf and say (in a deep sultry voice) “Oh, those old things? I made them.” Right after you say that, they will pass out in amazement.

I’ll even bring some cork so you can give the little things a way to not scratch up your coffee table.

On the tail end of “National Clown Week, we’re going to get right into August by taking pen in hand and coloring our little hearts out! Sometimes it’s just so peaceful to sit with colors and fill in the lines, there’s nothing to worry about, no complicated thoughts, no anxiety about where to go or what to do. The lovely black-velvet mini posters I have for coloring should fit just about any mood, and if you need more of a freeform feeling, I have keychain coloring kits. The keychain kit is basically a plastic round shape with removable customizable inserts that you can draw on, or write some errant quip, and then clip to your belt buckle or bag strap.

I love August. It’s when summer is just SUMMER, the year is happy to just be itself, sure, there are some holidays here and there, but none of them are “in your face” it’s casual, you can feel relaxed about everything in August.

July 31st, 2013 • DIY Message in a Bottle Necklace!

Message in a Bottle Necklaces! This is the first craft I’ve ever promoted that endorses the loss of the project you make! That’s right, everyone knows that a “lost” message in a bottle is the most exciting ever. If you don’t believe me, check out these STORIES ABOUT LOST MESSAGES IN BOTTLES (one of the stories is actually about a balloon, but whatever.) It goes without saying that the “love token” or “love note” scenarios with one of these things has limitless options, but here are some other things you can do with your message in a bottle necklace:

  • Wear it, put on some yoga stirrup pants, adjust your voice to the high-pitched tenor of Sting, then serenade people singing Message in a Bottle 
  • Store extra cheese sauce for your  nachos at the Dodger game.
  • Make a tiny molotov cocktail, throw it in the street and watch the scenario backfire miserably because the bottle is plastic. Hmmm. Okay, maybe don’t do this one.
  • Use it as one of many clues on an elaborate scavenger hunt
  • Write a dirty poem on the message and hand the bottle to someone on the bus as you are leaving.
  • Fill it with Grape Gatorade for your upcoming Triathlon
  • Keep that recipe for ambrosia salad handy, no matter where you go.
  • Dawn your skipper cap, stand at the edge of the ocean, place the bottle in the water, salute, and watch your message it begin it’s journey.

So there you have it, I can’t say all of them are useful, but they’ll certainly get you thinking about the endless possibilities of what can be done with this amazing craft!

Get that beachy clean feeling this week with the tropical bright colors of flowery frog magnets for your high tide adventures. If you’re not into frogs OR magnets, do not despair! I’ll have extra shapes and backings for PINS so that if you prefer to wear your creation on your person, the sassy option shall be available to you. You may also be visited by a shark or turtle craft, if one happens to swim by you in the bar… it’s been known to happen.

We have arrived at LA’s proprietary time of year, if you can’t find something to do in July and August, God help you, because OMGSOMANYTHINGS! A whiff of sunscreen permeates every block, the outdoor movies and the outdoor music are in full swing. You’ve got EIGHT fantastic LA Beaches to choose from and a smattering of public pools with free access, and hotel pools accessible through patronage or by utilizing the good ol’ fashioned “sneak-in approach.” Every custom food truck within a 20 mile radius is trying to find you! Every theme park southern california has boasts longer hours, the water parks are operating at full flood capacity! Festivals and fairs beckon with sugary salty treats as you bravely board any manner of exciting and harrowing rides held together with scotch tape, cotter pins and rubber tires! It’s SUMMERRRR!!!!
