CraftNight @Akbar! 9pm til’ midnight – Mini Bats! ~ $3 donation pleeze!

It’s Craftivism Wednesday where CraftNight is gonna BAT AWAY THE BULLSHIT with special guest, Joey Stern! We’re providing 6-inch mini bats that you can decorate with your very own pride colors. There will be paint, glitter, googly eyes, other sparkly things and MORE.

The Stonewall Riots started when LGBTQ patrons of the Stonewall Inn fought back against harassment and brutality by the cops. It inspired the tradition of Pride Month.

We just had a glorious, fantastic, colorful, sassy PRIDE in June, we celebrated and now the glitter has cleared, and it’s time to start considering where all this is going. Companies are not just realizing we’re here and we’re queer, they’ve realized we WORK and we make MONEY. Companies like money, and they wanna buy us.

Generations have fought hard for an inclusive queer utopia that embraces the whole rainbow nation. Seeking to overturn straight supremacism, sexual guilt and traditional gender roles, we come from queer warriors who sought social transformation, rather than assimilation and equality within the status quo.

Is Pride now capitalism with a pink hue?!? How much of LGBTQ+ is part of the neoliberal establishment?!? Has the LGBTQ+ psyche been colonised by a hetero-normative mentality?

BAT AWAY THE BULLSHIT!!!

Which brands are slapping rainbows on their stores/products and saying they support us, while simultaneously endorsing conservative right wing causes and candidates?!? Where does the money go when they say percentages of sales go to “The LGBTQ Community”?!?

Do you know which NINE “rainbow-waving” asshole corporations say that they support us, but also gave a MILLION OR MORE DOLLARS to anti-gay politicians in the last election cycle? Find out at CraftNight tonight and BAT AWAY THE BULLSHIT!!!! These big businesses can’t have it both ways. Let’s remind them and ourselves that this crap doesn’t fly.

Potholders! • July 10th, 2019

CraftNight @Akbar! 9pm til’ midnight – Potholders! ~ $3 donation pleeze!

It’s not just potholders, it’s NATURAL potholders. They’re canvas, you can draw stuff on ’em, maybe glue an exciting felt tableau on it, a scene, a name, it’s an heirloom in the making.

Potholders are a summertime rite of passage. We’ve never done potholders at CraftNight before, and these are beauties, dare I say, they could actually keep you from burning yer mitts! Maybe you’ll stow this one in your camping supplies for when you need to pull the dutch oven out of the fire? So macho!

Or you can hang it in the kitchen for that decorative touch, right next to your “spoons around the world” display hanging nearby. Whatever the case, I think you’ll find that these slightly puffy squares of fabric are just waiting for your inspiration to make them shine.

And shine we shall, as temperatures rise, and the light stays long in the sky, come in, have a drink, show us your new sandals. There will be music, air conditioning, camaraderie, and lots of glitter glue!

Unicorn or Rainbow Windchime! • July 3rd, 2019

CraftNight @Akbar! 9pm til’ midnight – Rainbow OR Unicorn Windchimes! ~ $3 donation pleeze

Annnnd we’re BACK! And we’ve got windchimes, you can paint ’em. Which one are you going to choose? Dammit they’re both so CUTE and FUN and they have such potential, there’s only 12 of each one, decisions decisions!

Sometimes choices feel IMPOSSIBLE. You just sit there trying to pick A or B and you lose sleep over it and wonder if the stars will EVER forgive you for whatever option you pick.

The stars do not care.

Sounds callous, but really it’s quite liberating. A few thousand years is negligible to the age of a typical star, which is on the order of billions of years so… I feel pretty okay telling you the stars don’t care.

There will always be consequences, you will always disappoint people, the gnawing feeling of foreboding or regret may never leave you. But… the basic answer to most gnarly decision-making processes is: do what feels TRUE.

Anytime you need to pick a thing, be a choice, do a decision: courage is mustered. Your choice is always the crossing of a threshold, a road taken, a lane changed. People may think you’re bonkers, opinions shall be yodeled from mountaintops and cell phones and other forms of communication. You will be judged.

But they are all out there, and you’re in here, in your brain.

Ruminate on your decision, hold it like a stone in your pocket. Let the fears of all the goods and bads sift away. When it’s properly sifted, look for what feels true, and know that this lil’ piece of somethin, true knowing… even if you don’t understand it, that’s the key to the kingdom within.

Hayyyy SUMMER happened on the calendar, has anyone told the clouds? I don’t think they know. Anyway, this week is NO CRAFTS, but we’re back with the unicorns and rainbows the following week in July!

SPECIAL EVENT + CRAFTNIGHT! @AKBAR! 8pm SHOW “The Complete History of Drag in a Few Mo-mo” starring David LeBarron! FOLLOWED BY a DRAG CRAFT from CraftNight! Starting around 9:30, 9:45!

Dahling, it’s a different sort of evening, it’s DELUXE! Akbar’s rumpus room has been turned into a theater, and the show starts at 8! It’s a fundraiser dress rehearsal for David LeBarron’s “The Complete History of Drag in a Few Mo-mo”. This show will travel to the Orlando, Florida Fringe Festival! Help this talented thespian offset costs by giving a $10 donation to see this limited engagement presentation!

It’s rarely this enjoyable/practical learning this much wondrous history in a little over an hour, while having cocktails no less! I highly recommend it.

As said in David’s show “Who the FUCK starts a drag show ON TIME?!?” This rollicking whirlwind of fabulousness may or may not start on time, which means that CraftNight will probably start more like 9:30, or 9:45.

But then we’re having a PARTY!!! And there will be, yes, a DRAG CRAFT, curated specially by yours truly, the LA Craft Captain. Will you use pom poms? Will you use felt? Will you use GEMS? Ah, only your drag soul will know for sure. We’ll have it ALL, and we’ll show you how to go drag or go home.

Treat yourself, sugar, see a show and have a craft, you’re worth it!

Speaking of treats, I directed a show: Thelma & Leweeze the Musical, and it opens THIS FRIDAY! Come see it, I’d love to see you! Also, I’m calling Loteria at the Mermaid Bar this Sunday, and at the end of May, we have a special guest calling Bet Yer Bottom Bingo, Auntie Lyla!!! OMG!!!!
