Craft Project: Autumnal Leaf Wreath

*******$4 PABST/TECATES • $5 Cocktail Special: At the Heart of Cocktails
*********$3 suggested donation, please!

Staring the eleventh month in the face and marveling at time’s swift clock hands, tickin’ and tockin. Elections happened, things are changing, even if all the things we wanted didn’t happen, one MUST acknowledge that there is change on the horizon, some of it simply incredible.

I’ve got leaf wreaths this week, and they are, like usual, as easy or as hard as you want them to be, their complexity is completely up to you, dear Crafter. There will be baubles and bits to glue to this lively wreath, you can use them to help make your project look more 3-D, should you so desire.

It’s a new moon tonight, no reflected light in the sky from our old round friend, just darkness.

It starts picking up steam though, and eventually we’ll see what’s known as the full “Beaver” or “Frost” moon. OKAY GET YOUR BEAVER JOKES IN NOW, THAT’S RIGHT, SNICKER SNICKER GUFFAW EUPHAMISM YAHHH BEAVER HAHAHAHAHAHAHA BEAVER MOON WOOOOO YUCK YUCKITY YUCK. Okay got it out of your system? Are you thinking about a furry beaver with a silky waterproof coat? I hope so.

Centuries ago, in the olden times, if you wanted to stay warm by trapping and ensuring a supply of warm winter furs for winter, you could bank on the business of beavers in November. Beavers begin building their winter dams in November, when cooler temperatures prevail, and this is also why we call November’s moon the “Frost” moon. In colder climates, stuff starts to freeze over, making lil’ ice crystals.

We’re not new agey… but if we were… we’d perhaps offer a meditation.

Beavers are badasses because they build their homes, and they PREPARE. Ever hear the FIVE Ps? “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.” I’m pretty sure that’s the mantra of the average beaver. You will NEVER catch a beaver not making their house on time, because if they rest on their laurels, the water freezes up, and blammo, house-building FAIL, no dam, no survival. Thus, be like a beaver, prepare yourself for the winter, for quiet reflection, for having enough snacks and journaling time, and hot tea and books and shows and assessment of how you spent your 2018. And THEN… hone in on your ideas, let ’em crystalize like frost! Solidify and designate ideas you want to explore when winter starts, care for these ideas, and see if you can whittle them into action.

And there you go, one moon, two names, two paths of inspiration… and meanwhile a leaf wreath craft for you to have for your very own.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

Leaf Leaf Wreath Wreath • November 6th, 2013

TONIGHT! Wednesday November 6th, 2013 from 9pm to midnight (or later) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Felt Leaf Wreath!
$2 Donation, por favor
$4 NEW DRINK SPECIAL!!! >>> The Lyla! A Ginger Beer and whiskey combo that’ll kick up your heels!

Have you been staring at the door to your igloo, apartment, garage, mansion, shack, (whatever) and gazed at the entryway and thought to yourself “If only I had a wreath with the warm hues of the season to grace the exterior of my dwelling.” Tonight the fantasy can come true, and you can live bigger than the outdoors with your very own home made fall leaf wreath!

In ancient times, a harvest wreath would be hung on the door to help prevent crop failure and plagues. Since there seems to be no shortage of coughing and hacking sick people all around the city right now, you could consider this a preventative measure to ward off the sickly vibes of the flu! The new pagan fall wreath: Better than the flu shot! Or, you could even use your fall wreath as a meditative intentional piece that reminds you to get enough groceries for the Thanksgiving dinner you’ll be cooking in a few weeks.

The one you make tonight won’t be made with home made leaves, although if you find some skittering around on the ground that are colorful enough for this purpose, by all means, bring them in and use ’em!

I have sticky-back felt leaves, some foam leaves, and I’ll have a template for you to cut out your wreath shape from chip board, which means it doesn’t have to be round. You can make a trapezoid or rhombus wreath! And I’ll be bringing all that good scrumple for you to gussy it up, you know, gems, googly eyes, yarn, the stuff to help you really celebrate your way.

A night to remember, you and your wreath just a walkin’ down the street singin’ do wah diddy diddy dum diddee doo!

See you at the Craft Table,
JP Craft Captain
