February 2nd, 2011 • GroundHog Birthday

This Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 from 9pm until midnight, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!
Project: Groundhog Paper Dolls AND Craft Captain Birthday
$2 Processing fee
$4 Cosmopolitans

It is my Jack Benny year.
Jack Benny claimed to be 39 for more than 40 years.
39 is 40 save one.
Amelia Earhart went missing at age 39.
The Blue and Gold Fleet’s bay cruises leave from Pier 39 in San Francisco.
There are 39 prohibited activities in the Mishna Shabbat.
“39” is a song by Queen.
Seems to me that 39 is all about innovation, and general trouble-making fun. I’m looking forward to it.
It is my birthday on February 2nd, 2011
Usually I slink away for my birthday and go do something fun, like take public transportation all day to places unknown, or hop on rocks in parks. But it seems that if one’s birthday actually falls on a CraftNight, there is but one thing to do, and that is CELEBRATE. February 2nd is also Groundhog Day, and we will be making our annual Groundhog Paper dolls, designed by yours truly. This is an annual CraftNight tradition, making Groundhog paper dolls, it’s a cut and color craft. I’ve illustrated many little outfits for this creature, from a Cupid outfit for Valentine’s Day, to football attire for the Superbowl.

Whether you feel like coloring or not, it would give me great pleasure to have you walk in and see me on my birthday, it makes a birthday feel special. There will be the usual music, and cocktails, and yes, this Wednesday, there will be groundhogs. I have no guarantee, however, if there will be shadows.

See you at the Craft Table,

January 26th, 2011 • Lamination Coronation

This Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 from 9pm until midnight, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!

Project: Laminating stuff with the laminator

$2 processing fee, please

I’ve got the laminator, and I’m not afraid to use it. This is the VERY FIRST time we’ve done this heat-based craft, whereupon, you draw or collage something neat-0, and we preserve it for all eternity between two sheets of plastic. We’ve done cold lamination, but this is going to be EVEN MORE INTENSE.

Here are just some of the exciting things you could do at CraftNight this Wednesday:

1.) Preserved guide maps that lead one to fictional places like Narnia, Treasure Island, Azkaban, Bali Ha’i, Vice City and other compelling constructed worlds.

2.)”Homemade Behavior Chart” with columns for each behavior you want to modify. Maybe you want a behavior chart that helps you eat less Swiss cheese, or one that helps you sing opera solos more often.

3.) Flash cards of different kinds of little poofy sheep… to remind you that there is a place in this world for such beings.

4.) A diploma for a friend who has graduated to “totally awesome friend” that lists all of their amazing merits.

5.) Drivers license for the cat (out of state, of course.)

6.) Laminated “Backstage Pass” for an actual event you are trying to sneak into… maybe it will work.

7.) Naughty version of the time-honored game of “Concentration.”

8.) Laminated paper doll with fashionable and positionable laminated clothing.

9.) Your very own board game, with game pieces that look like YOU.

10.) ANYTHING FLAT! (Or can be flattened easily)

Interesting items to laminate: Lock of hair, ticket from Air Supply concert, taco bell bag, scraps of fabric, photos, excerpts from ancient paperbacks, doodles from high school, pictures those who are far and near and missed.

There will be some stuff to laminate, but bring some of your own if you want to laminate something specific, like an AREA 51 Identification Card.

See you at the Craft Table,

January 19th, 2011 • TIN CAN Craft

This Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 from 9pm – 12(ish) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Tin Can Crafts • $2 processing fee, please

Drink Special: $4 Cosmopolitans

I bet you didn’t know that January 19th is Tin Can Day. Seriously, this was the actual day of the birth of the tin can, and the actual date that the tin can was patented in 1810! The first tin cans were so thick, you had to hammer at them like crazy. Like many “technologically advanced” inventions, it was a pain in the arse, but developments were still in the works.

In 1835, someone decided to put BEER in cans, and then pop-top cans appeared in 1959 making it a total party. Since then the cans have gotten thinner, we have fancy tools to open them, and the things inside of cans these days will blow your mind right out the window with all the leaves. If you don’t believe me, check out this blog of the weirdest stuff in cans, it’s got pictures! The trusty tin can is still entirely recyclable, corrosion resistant, and durable, and I think, very worthy of honor and merit.

So we’re going to do CAN crafts, we’ll have tin cans, and felt, foam, and glue, and some ideas, and we’re going to have a good ol’fashioned can-crafting party. You can make a string telephone, a pencil holder, a bank, a treat jar, salt and pepper shakers, vase, toothbrush holder, tea bag holder, etc.

And NO I’m not bringing tin snips or nails for you to punch holes in the cans. DRINKING and SHARP OBJECTS DO NOT MIX! But if you want to bring your own tin snips at your own risk, go ahead! If a fellow crafter wants to borrow your tools… smell their breath and ask them how many fingers you’re holding up, then use your best judgement.

Neither Akbar nor CraftNight is responsible if you slice through your finger, poke out your eye or remove someone’s spleen, you hear me? I can’t believe I actually had to type that, but California (The Golden State) is full of surprises… and court rooms.

I am gathering as many tin cans that I can find before CraftNight, if you have any that you don’t need, would you mind contacting me? I’ll take them off your hands! Here, you can use this handy contact form…

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

January 12th, 2011 • Fusion Beads

This Wednesday, January 12th, 2011 from 9pm – 12(ish) at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Fusion Beads ••• $2 processing fee, please

Drink Special: $4 Cosmopolitans – well-fortified and robust!

Wow, now that the dumb head cold I had is gone gone GONE, we’re ready for CRAFTS IN 2011!!! Let me tempt you with something truly melty-fantastica. We’re gonna FUSE together our colors and thoughts and resolutions for the new year in BEAD form! This is a very exciting craft, because it requires heat to activate the melty-sticky action of all the tiny plastic pieces you’ve assembled. You’ve got to be committed if you’re going to fuse beads together, that’s why I like to do them at the start of the new year.

I’ll be here with my trusty iron and ironing board, to help glom all the little shapes together, and you can make a key fob, a coaster, an amulet, a sculpture, a what? Well, that’s for you to decide! Come in and do your first craft of 2011, it’ll be a fine thing to have you join us.

January 5th, 2011 • NO CRAFTS!!! (Got a Head Cold)

Welcome to the new year, crafters! I waited until the LAST possible second to see if I was going to feel better this week, and, alas, it’s only “Day 3” of what looks like a pretty determined cold. Rest, vitamins, beverages, soup and Vicks is the regimen until operations are back to normal.

We’ll be back next week to start out CraftNight with FUSION BEADS!

Missing you, can’t wait to craft with you,

JP Craft Captain
