November 17th, 2010 • Hand Turkeys!

This Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 from 9:30 pm until midnight, at Akbar, it’s CraftNight!

Project: Hand Turkeys • $2 Processing fee, please • Drink special is our famous $4 cosmopolitan

UPDATE: After 10pm, Fred Schneider of the B-52s will be running the DJ booth during CraftNight. Is that crazy, or what?!? This is confirmed as 100% happening, so get in here for SURE if you want to catch some super special Schneider-celebrity pixie dust…

This is the LAST CraftNight of November, we’ll resume our antics on December 1st with Dreidels, and next week, instead of CraftNight, sink your teeth into a slice of DJ Chris Bowen’s “PIE” the dance party that rocks your Thanksgiving Eve. It’s important to get all that cardio in before those mashed potatoes make their way down yer gullet.

Hey Turkeys! CraftNight is making the time-honored paper hand turkeys of yore this week!

A CraftNight Classic, we always make Hand Turkeys just before Thanksgiving, it calms the senses and prepares the digestive track for copious amounts of holiday eating. As always, if you don’t know what a hand turkey is: That’s what we’re here for! We’re here to guide you through the newness of the weirdness of time-honored traditions like paper turkeys made from the act of tracing your own hand! Even better, trace someone else’s hand!

The usual festive atmosphere will be greeting you heartily, and we’ll see you in DECEMBER for the very first night of Hannukah!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

November 10th, 2010 • Fall Sand Art

This Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 from 9-ish to 12am at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!

Project: FALL SAND ART! • $2 Processing Fee, please • Drink Special $4 Cosmos

We won’t be approaching the Winter Solstice for another month yet, but WOW, the wind almost blew the cat through the air, not to mention some garden boulders and an ill-placed patio umbrella. While this blustery behavior could be seen as the harbinger of winter, it’s NOT WINTER YET! Nosiree, and CraftNight is celebrating MORE fall-centric projects by doing some Autumnal sand art. This craft involves removing  the yellow paper from the card, which reveals a sticky section to sprinkle on the colored sand and voila: a picture is revealed!

In limited supply, I’ve got leaves, pilgrim hat-wearing turkey and pumpkin fall tableaus. Also: you will get your very own individual helpings of colored sand, and if you don’t like those colors, I happen to have MORE colors. If you want to be a rebel and change those deciduous leaves to coniferous, you CAN!

Extra Curricular Moment: After the recent rain, and the wonderful wind whipping all around, it’s better than ever to take a walk and look at leaves. When’s the last time you got all nature-like and wandered your neighborhood noticing that it’s dinner time, and the trees are changing? If you have time, take some!

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

November 3rd, 2010 • Turkey Paddleball Craft OR TeePees…

TONIGHT! Wednesday November 3rd, 2010 from 9 – midnight or so, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Turkey Paddleball OR Teepee   • $2 processing fee, please  • $4 cosmo drink special!

We only have THREE CraftNights in November, thanks to a wonderful and sure-to-be-tawdry dance party at Akbar on Thanksgiving Eve. There will be no crafts that evening, but there will be music, revelry and all the trimmings of a gay night out!

That said, I’m starting some Turkey shenanigans a little early, with the idea that if you gussy up this craft just right, you may be able to deliver it by hand to an unsuspecting relative on Thanksgiving Day! I have Turkey Paddleballs, and teepees. If you get to CraftNight on the earlier side of things, you can pick which one you want, but if you get here late… you’ll have to pick something else.

And if you’re not into the whole Thanksgiving Turkey-Native-American-Fall-Corn-Scarecrow vibe: just say “to hell” with the instructions, and use the pieces provided to bend the accoutrement to your personal whim. We’re all about ingenuity and inventive solutions to everyday challenges at CraftNight.

See you at the Craft Table!

October 20th, 2010 • Tiny Coffins & SQUARE DANCING!!!

This Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 from 9pm – midnight, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Tiny Wooden Coffins • $2 processing fee, please

Musical Guests: LIVE music from Triple Chicken Foot & Squaredancing Caller Extraordinaire, Cory Marie Podielski

Special Bicycle Tour Ending at CraftNight, the 2010 Gothtober Ride (read more below)

OH MAN, DID I SPLURGE!!! I saw these tiny little wooden OG-style (6-sided tapered at the shoulders) coffins and HAD to have them, because they are so macabre, yet fitting for whatever mood you’re in as far as decorating and painting tiny coffins goes. You can either make/use them as jewelry cases, or store your pills, snuff, marbles or other unmentionables in them, OR you can even make a tiny vampire that lives in it. But just in case, if you’d prefer a different craft, I also have popsicle stick pumpkins and haunted houses for the discerning crafter. It really is a smorgasbord of delights at the Craft Table this week.

SQUARE DANCING!!! If THREE types of Crafts to choose from doesn’t leave you spoiled enough, you can scootch your booty to the old-time beat with Triple Chicken Foot with Ms. Cory calling the shots from her calling platform. This is a wonderful way to get to know new people, or even people you already know! They play fiddle, guitar and bass, it sounds lovely, treat yourself to some cardio and have some laughs!

GOTHTOBER BIKE RIDE: This ride is led by none other than Jen Hofer & Rob Ray. It is called “A Spin of the Wheel: a musically-inspired chance operation bicycle expedition” Meet at Union Station front Entrance at 8pm RAIN or SHINE • This ride is FREE! • This ride will end at CraftNight around 10 or so. Tunes by 12 local and non-local bands will inspire this bicycle adventure that will explore and enjoy the city!

If you get to the meeting place late, and want to catch up, call or text Jen’s cell (323)428-4611 and you can get more info by clicking DAY 20 on the Gothtober Calendar (link below.)

And yeah, when you get a chance, please visit GOTHTOBER, it was made for you to visit, it’s a packed with crafts, songs, videos, and many other diversions of the first-rate category.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain (back from NY, ready to CRAFT with you!)
