The annual pagan ritual of the SuperBowl happens this upcoming weekend. The SuperBowl is not going to prognosticate the weather for you, we have groundhogs for that.
In recognition of this ancient sports/woodchuck-oriented weekend I’m combining groundhogs and football to bring you the classic hand-illustrated (by yours truly) groundhog football player paper dolls! Raven and 49er fans will BOTH have an opportunity to dress up and color their groundhog in team colors.
Don’t dig football? Don’t worry! There are other outfits for this cutie of a groundhog, If you want to dress up your “land-beaver” in something more fashionable or interesting, I’ll have an exciting non-football option for you to worth with, and ultimately, everyone should leave CraftNight with a lovely keepsake.
Many exciting ancient pagan winter celebrations ultimately have to do with worrying about whether its going to stay cold forever, or if there is hope, if there is light. Did you know that if you can flip a crépe in a pan with one hand, and hold a 50 cent piece in the other, that’s a sign of prosperity in the coming year? This most current full moon is called “The Wolf Moon” because wolves are getting hungry, the forest is no longer lush with rabbits and rats to eat, food is disappearing! Be glad you don’t live in a yurt where a wolf nose might poke into your tent hoping to eat you! Did you know that people carry candles at Candlemas because when the infernal god, Pluto kidnapped Proserpine (Persephone) and took her to his swanky underground lair, her Mom, Ceres (Demeter), searched in vain for her with candles? The pope totally tried to turn that pagan holiday around by saying it was about the Virgin Mary, and nobody really cared as long as they got to walk around together in the dead of winter holding candles, so there you have it.
Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yeah! Ahem… I was born on Geary St. in San Francisco, I’ve got sourdough and fog in my blood, therefore: GO NINERZZZZ!!!! (Couldn’t help it, I know you’re rolling your eyes…)
See you at the Craft Table!
