September 29th, 2010 • Fall Necklace Mania!

This Wednesday (tonight!) September 29th, 2010 from 9:30pm until midnight (or later), at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: FALL Necklace Mania  ••• $2 processing fee, please

Here I was tooting my Fall horn, thinking we’d been through the heat deal, and then BAM! It happens every year, just when I think we’ve made it through the summer, nature gives us a roundhouse punch of 113º!!! Do you see the picture of these crayons up here? This was SUNDAY at the West Hollywood Book Fair! We put the crayons out for kids to color with, we turned our heads for a moment or so, and came back to empty husks of paper floating in a molten hot stew of colored wax!

Anyway, after the sun comes down, come join us for FALL NECKLACE Mania, where you can make a scarecrow necklace, a skull reflector necklace, or maybe even a combination of BOTH.

See you at the Craft Table,

September 22nd, 2010 • Kaleidoscopes

This Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 from 9pm – midnight at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Psychedelic Crazy Kaleidoscope Night! •••••• $2 Processing fee, please

Special Guest DJ TRIPLE X spinning goofy oddball “good trip” music while “Valerie and Her Week of Wonders” plays in the background!

In the evening, on September 22nd, 2010, the earth shall tilt just that much, not TOO much, and not TOO little, but just enough. Isn’t that another weird miracle of existence? This crazy little marble we’re spinnin’ on uses just a little more reason than rhyme, has its little subsolar point shift, and voila: Autumnal Equinox. If you can’t tell we’ve reached that special time of year, here’s a little list:

YOU KNOW IT’S FALL WHEN:

1.)  Greeting card companies are suddenly stocking a plethora of  works depicting multicolored corn, sheaves of wheat, dogs, wolves and birds of prey.
2.) Reaching Nirvana after crossing the river of existence, spirits of the dead give you a spirited “thumbs up”  from the great beyond.
3.) You burn your thumb baking over 1,000 Moon cakes and  your fire dragon dance needs a little more work.
4.) Rumors are flying that a supreme deity is going to elect you to sacrifice your only son, and it’s really freaking you out. You’re hoping it’s just a ruse.
5.) The urge to scatter endearing megalithic charms around the hills and valleys is irresistable.
6.) Celebrating your feast day with a well-fattened goose which has fed well on the stubble of the fields after the harvest is your idea of a GREAT time.
7.) As you help burn a giant wicker version of the vegetation spirit in an isolated and remote location, you notice the sky is on fire as well… weird. What was in those cookies?
8.) Personal seasonal goals include constructing a groovy pyramid which displays different patterns of triangles of light at the time of the solstices and equinoxes.
9.) In subsequent months, for no reason, friends nicknamed you “Percy” and you can’t ignore strong feelings willing you to return to the underworld to hang out with your true love.
10.) Finding an old Currier & Ives lithograph, you put some fruit on your head, pour yourself a spiced beverage (hot or cold) and become the vision of AUTUMN PERSONIFIED.

And finally, you know it’s Fall when CraftNight beckons you for kaleidoscopes, delicious cocktails, groovy visuals and excellent tunes this Wednesday.

See you at the Craft Table,

7:30 pm CraftNight MS Ride MOVIE FUNDRAISER!

September 15th, 2010 • MS Ride Movie Night Fundraiser

Movie: SCORE (1973) • Popcorn • Binocular Craft • DJ Triple X • Bake Sale

MOVIE STARTS at 7:30 >>> Crafts at the Usual 9:00 PM!!!

Funds you donate will pledge my Team: Total Sports Inspiration- WOLF EYES, in the 2010 MS Ride!

We don’t usually do an early craft, but we wanted to offer the rare opportunity for some people who WISH we’d hold an earlier CraftNight! So here it is, and it’s a doozy, rather naughty, to tell you the truth.

This Wednesday, at Akbar from 7:30 – until midnight or so, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!

If you can’t make it: Donate to my page, every little bit counts!

If you’re not sure what MS is, take a peek at this link. Every dollar you give to this week’s CraftNight goes toward our mission to Ride 160 Miles in the fight against MS on October 16th and 17th. I was diagnosed with relapsing/remitting MS in spring of 2007.  I fight my disease by staying strong, bicycling and raising money for research. Help me kick some ass and put the FUN in fundraising!

What better way to show support by our fundraiser than coming in and watching a sexploitation movie, purchasing some popcorn and maybe some baked goods, and then making some groovy custom binoculars for all your tawdry spying activities? Here’s the write-up for the movie SCORE:

The Write-Up on SCORE: Married bisexual swingers Elvira and Jack scoff at middle class morality, but are bored with the easy swingers who answer their ad in Screw Magazine. Seeking a challenge Elvira invites vanilla newlyweds over for dinner, drugs, and seduction (not necessarily in that order). But the inexperienced couple proves hard to crack due to a smorgasbord of immature sexual hang ups.

I mean, this is some pretty nutty hijinx, you don’t want to miss it, it’s beyond camp classic… it’s just sort of uh… beyond. DJ Triple X playing some grooves to go with crafting afterward.

See you at the Craft Table!

September 8th, 2010 • Giant Sunglasses

TONIGHT! Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 from 9pm until 12-ish, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Giant Sunglasses • $2 Processing fee, please

How strange, that summer is hiding from us, the drippy light from summer’s past eludes our thirsty city. Nevertheless, I’m prepared to do a “sun dance” and try to get our star to peek at us a few more times before Autumn sets in. How’m I gonna do that?

GIANT SUNGLASSES

If your soul is feeling rusty and fussy from all these clouds, come and swirl together with me an incantatory appeal for more vitamin D. Whatever the case, these are fine and dandy glasses, complete with mellowing yellow lenses, so that you at least LOOK like the sun, if not experiencing much sun. I’m bringing the pens so that you can color them any way you want, and of course, there will be baubles and beads and shapes of all kinds to deck out your shades to your personal taste.

NEXT WEEK CRAFTNIGHT STARTS EARLY!!! Read More About It!

See you at the Craft Table!

September 1st, 2010 • Starfish Beach Buddy

TONIGHT! Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 from 9pm until 12-ish or so, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!

Project: Starfish Beach Buddy • $2 Processing fee, por favor

You know, I’m not sure if there’s a Hell, but if there is one, I might be going there for this craft. With all these esoteric, nebulous craft companies I order from, sometimes the descriptions online aren’t all that detailed. I thought “Oh! Starfish buddies! Perfect for summer, how beachy!” The concept is that you get a starfish shape, and decorate it with a little beach outfit and make it into a magnet.

Imagine my chagrin, my horror, my mortification when the package got there and it contained small boxes of REAL STARFISHES. So then: Oops.

This is not a vegan craft. Life forms were dried and are no longer alive in the making of this project.

If this freaks you out, it’s TOTALLY OKAY. I have a a variety of back-up craftts for you to choose from, so please come in and craft, you can make something else. And if you want to march around outside with a big sign protesting CraftNight, that’s fine too, I totally understand, I’ll buy you a cocktail. Feel the way you feel, that’s one of our mottos.

I’ve spent the last week lying awake in bed contemplating the neural activities of starfish. Some people just think of them as glorified shells. I am not a vegetarian, and for the record, starfish are not vegetarians either, so I can’t be a total ninny and pretend that dried starfish are the most horrible thing ever, because they aren’t. But it is a quandry. It’s controversial, it alienates some people, thrills others. Such is art.

I would think, if you indeed decide to make one… make this starfish COUNT. Don’t let it have been dried for naught. Go all the way. Craft like you’ve never crafted before, commemorate it, honor it, and keep it. Forever.

See you at the Craft Table,
