October 20th, 2010 • Tiny Coffins & SQUARE DANCING!!!

This Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 from 9pm – midnight, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Tiny Wooden Coffins • $2 processing fee, please

Musical Guests: LIVE music from Triple Chicken Foot & Squaredancing Caller Extraordinaire, Cory Marie Podielski

Special Bicycle Tour Ending at CraftNight, the 2010 Gothtober Ride (read more below)

OH MAN, DID I SPLURGE!!! I saw these tiny little wooden OG-style (6-sided tapered at the shoulders) coffins and HAD to have them, because they are so macabre, yet fitting for whatever mood you’re in as far as decorating and painting tiny coffins goes. You can either make/use them as jewelry cases, or store your pills, snuff, marbles or other unmentionables in them, OR you can even make a tiny vampire that lives in it. But just in case, if you’d prefer a different craft, I also have popsicle stick pumpkins and haunted houses for the discerning crafter. It really is a smorgasbord of delights at the Craft Table this week.

SQUARE DANCING!!! If THREE types of Crafts to choose from doesn’t leave you spoiled enough, you can scootch your booty to the old-time beat with Triple Chicken Foot with Ms. Cory calling the shots from her calling platform. This is a wonderful way to get to know new people, or even people you already know! They play fiddle, guitar and bass, it sounds lovely, treat yourself to some cardio and have some laughs!

GOTHTOBER BIKE RIDE: This ride is led by none other than Jen Hofer & Rob Ray. It is called “A Spin of the Wheel: a musically-inspired chance operation bicycle expedition” Meet at Union Station front Entrance at 8pm RAIN or SHINE • This ride is FREE! • This ride will end at CraftNight around 10 or so. Tunes by 12 local and non-local bands will inspire this bicycle adventure that will explore and enjoy the city!

If you get to the meeting place late, and want to catch up, call or text Jen’s cell (323)428-4611 and you can get more info by clicking DAY 20 on the Gothtober Calendar (link below.)

And yeah, when you get a chance, please visit GOTHTOBER, it was made for you to visit, it’s a packed with crafts, songs, videos, and many other diversions of the first-rate category.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain (back from NY, ready to CRAFT with you!)

October 13th, 2010 • Bead Pumpkin Craft!

TONIGHT! October 13th, 2010 from 9-ish to 12am at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!

Project: Bead Pumpkin Craft • $2 Processing fee, please

Special Note, you should visit: GOTHTOBER.COM for crafts, recipes and MORE!

Also Coming Up: October 20th, 2010 CraftNight >>>> SQUAREDANCING!!! Live Music from Triple Chicken Foot, Squares called by none other than the fabulous Cory Marie Podielski!

Tonight’s Craft is a PONY BEAD craft, where you assemble and take home your very own verisimilitude of America’s favorite orange seasonal squash: the pumpkin.

Why couldn’t the pony sing?

He was a little horse! (GET IT?!? HORSE, HOARSE?!? HA HA HA HA HA!)

But seriously folks, what IS a pony bead? The answer to this question is: I don’t know! But they seem to be bigger than your average beads, made for being seen and worked with easily. The clincher is, however, that this handsome pumpkin pony bead clip is just that: a CLIP. You can sport it on the zipper of your sport jacket. You can wave it around like an 18th century watch fob. You can keep it in your pocket and use it as an autumnal abacus for when you forget how many leaves have changed color this month.

Come in and see what it’s all about, Lieutenant Coral Lobera will be at the helm this evening, give it a whirl!

October 6th, 2010 • DIY Arachnids

TONIGHT! Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 from 9-ish to midnight, at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: DIY Arachnids

$2 processing fee, please • $4 delicious cosmo drink special!

Heeeeeyyyyy, it’s October, which means GOTHTOBER HAS LAUCHED!!! We’re in our 8th year of this crazy curated countdown calendar, packed with crazy stuff like edible graveyard recipes, bizarre gender-bending fashion shows, and a Halloween reading list TO DIE FOR. You can view the calendar at the link above, and if you want to know more about Gothtober, visit our BLOG.

I’m writing this from NY! Anyone you know in NY who wants to see a fantastic kids puppet show? Come check us out at 45 Bleecker, come see Pasta! a Pop Ups Puppet Musical! I’ll be there until the 14th!

Me being in NY doesn’t mean CraftNight isn’t happening, nosiree, October is always a CraftNight cavalcade of good stuff, and tonight will be hosted by Craft Lieutenants Lori, Coral, Elaine and Ashley. Ashley is baking cupcakes. CUPCAKES. Come in and get a sweet treat while supplies last!

The project is SPIDERS, you get a web/spider kit with some little spiders, as well as a separate BEAD spider that you can make to to with the web kit. This makes about three spiders in all, which is the perfect amount of arachnids, in case you were wondering.

And yes, square dancing is on the horizon, the 20th, with Triple Chicken Foot & Corie Marie Podielski, and there are rumors of Abdikraut visiting and selling some wares…

See you at the Craft Table (well, the Lieutenants will, anyway!)

September 29th, 2010 • Fall Necklace Mania!

This Wednesday (tonight!) September 29th, 2010 from 9:30pm until midnight (or later), at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: FALL Necklace Mania  ••• $2 processing fee, please

Here I was tooting my Fall horn, thinking we’d been through the heat deal, and then BAM! It happens every year, just when I think we’ve made it through the summer, nature gives us a roundhouse punch of 113º!!! Do you see the picture of these crayons up here? This was SUNDAY at the West Hollywood Book Fair! We put the crayons out for kids to color with, we turned our heads for a moment or so, and came back to empty husks of paper floating in a molten hot stew of colored wax!

Anyway, after the sun comes down, come join us for FALL NECKLACE Mania, where you can make a scarecrow necklace, a skull reflector necklace, or maybe even a combination of BOTH.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain

September 22nd, 2010 • Kaleidoscopes

This Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 from 9pm – midnight at Akbar, it’s CRAFTNIGHT!!!

Project: Psychedelic Crazy Kaleidoscope Night! •••••• $2 Processing fee, please

Special Guest DJ TRIPLE X spinning goofy oddball “good trip” music while “Valerie and Her Week of Wonders” plays in the background!

In the evening, on September 22nd, 2010, the earth shall tilt just that much, not TOO much, and not TOO little, but just enough. Isn’t that another weird miracle of existence? This crazy little marble we’re spinnin’ on uses just a little more reason than rhyme, has its little subsolar point shift, and voila: Autumnal Equinox. If you can’t tell we’ve reached that special time of year, here’s a little list:

YOU KNOW IT’S FALL WHEN:

1.)  Greeting card companies are suddenly stocking a plethora of  works depicting multicolored corn, sheaves of wheat, dogs, wolves and birds of prey.
2.) Reaching Nirvana after crossing the river of existence, spirits of the dead give you a spirited “thumbs up”  from the great beyond.
3.) You burn your thumb baking over 1,000 Moon cakes and  your fire dragon dance needs a little more work.
4.) Rumors are flying that a supreme deity is going to elect you to sacrifice your only son, and it’s really freaking you out. You’re hoping it’s just a ruse.
5.) The urge to scatter endearing megalithic charms around the hills and valleys is irresistable.
6.) Celebrating your feast day with a well-fattened goose which has fed well on the stubble of the fields after the harvest is your idea of a GREAT time.
7.) As you help burn a giant wicker version of the vegetation spirit in an isolated and remote location, you notice the sky is on fire as well… weird. What was in those cookies?
8.) Personal seasonal goals include constructing a groovy pyramid which displays different patterns of triangles of light at the time of the solstices and equinoxes.
9.) In subsequent months, for no reason, friends nicknamed you “Percy” and you can’t ignore strong feelings willing you to return to the underworld to hang out with your true love.
10.) Finding an old Currier & Ives lithograph, you put some fruit on your head, pour yourself a spiced beverage (hot or cold) and become the vision of AUTUMN PERSONIFIED.

And finally, you know it’s Fall when CraftNight beckons you for kaleidoscopes, delicious cocktails, groovy visuals and excellent tunes this Wednesday.

See you at the Craft Table,

JP Craft Captain
