The lazy blue of the sky keeps painting itself over the city day after way, sometimes adding a touch of brown to the horizon, other times letting the wind polish it away to a murky depth of twinkling summer stars. This summer seems to be especially summer-like in its glorious insistance, there’s no better excuse to run screaming from the cubicle, socks flying, papers be damned, in search of a sun-kissed sandy beach or a cocktail with a silly lil’ paper umbrella sitting on the rim of the glass.
People who live far away from Los Angeles think its like this all the time. They think your life is like Jack Tripper’s, where you fall off your bicycle in the sand and end up living in a beach side apartment building with two hot roommates and your downstairs neighbor: a goofy, yet friendly, flamboyantly-dressed landlord who fancies himself a ladies’ man that looks a hell of a lot like Don Knotts. The tourists who vacation here think we wear white pants and eat organic strawberries all day. They think we all have swimming pools and know all the movie stars. DON’T LET THEM DOWN!

It’s up to us to continue this charade, it’s your duty as an Angeleno to Come and dance on on our floor…… Take a step that is new….. We’ve a loveable space that needs your face, Three’s company too!

Consider Akbar to be your go-to “Regal Beagle” this summer, see you at the Craft Table!

June 27th, 2012 • Rainbow Bracelets!

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012 from 9pm(ish) until 12(or later) at Akbar,  it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Rainbow Bracelet
$2 Processing Fee
$4 Cosmopolitans: Taste the Explosion!
Stuff you might want to do this week:
Early Thursday 8pm: Nancy Jean Tucker’s LA Air
Late Thursday 10pm: Jean Spinosa’s WigOUt at Three Clubs
Sunday: 7pm Free/All Ages LaMuff Gold Lamé Video Premier, CD Release Party and Live Show!

We’re ending a month of gay pride celebrations with a shiny beady tribute to the rainbow with RAINBOW BRACELETS! I really like that queerness is symbolized by a multicolored arc. Even in today’s age of special effects, a rainbow still prevails in its ability to inspire joy in the most jaded and cantankerous individual. I dare say, your rainbow bracelet may even carry some or all of the aura of nature’s colorful meteorological phenomenon within it’s simple plastic pony-beaded brilliance. Rainbows are Incredible, and so’s this.

This beaded bracelet craft is quite simple, and much less complicated than the rainbow keychains we made last week, so if your week has been full of too many interconnecting parts and elements: fear not, this week’s project is the opposite. In fact, it’s SO easy, you could probably finish it in 2 minutes, if you need to craft and run.

See you at the Craft Table!

PS – One more thing, on July 16th, CraftNight will make a guest appearance at The Skirball Cultural Center at 9pm, come and PLAY!

June 20th, 2012 • Rainbow Keychain

TONIGHT! Wednesday, June 20th, 2012 from 9pm(ish) until 12(or later) at Akbar,  it’s CRAFTNIGHT!
Project: Rainbow Keychain
$2 Processing Fee
$4 Cosmopolitans: I go cuckoo for cosmo puffs!

The thick commercial weave of summer shall be upon us at 7:03pm on Wednesday and there will be thrilling, dare I say frightening things you can do with your estival activities this season. While making your exciting plans, invest in a deep tan and a peach-colored sweater and basque in the finery of ignored priorities! There’s nothing like a Wednesday night to brush off the blandness of sisyphean job tasks and brighten your life with a home made rainbow keychain of your making.

Is there nothing more banal than the uninspiring phrase “Where are my keys?”
A rainbow of colors on stretchy cording could be the answer to this problem.
And yep, all of June is  Gay and Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender pride month, which is why we’re doing rainbow crafts all 4 weeks to commemorate the amazing radness of it all. Someday I might have us make papier maché labrys axe thingers, but for now we’ll stick with rainbows. They’re so pretty.

See you at the Craft Table!
